The Electromechanics and Power Electronics group is one of the nine research groups of the Department of Electrical Engineering at TU/e. The group is the main center for research in electromechanical power conversion and power electronics in the Netherlands. The research is aligned with the three main strategic research themes of the Eindhoven University of Technology, i.e. Energy, Health and Smart Mobility. The four research tracks of the EPE group are high-tech motion systems and robotics, power electronics systems, smart mobility and advanced modeling. Furthermore, the group is one of the founders of the High Tech Systems Center in which all mechatronic knowledge of the TU/e will be bundled.

Vacancy
We are looking for a Lab Manager for the laboratory of the Power Electronics and Electromechanics group, at the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Responsibilities
The Lab Manager position includes not only laboratory management responsibilities, but also technical support in education and research processes.

The Lab Manager will be responsible for:
  • Managing the laboratory infrastructure and equipment (research and education laboratories);
  • Buying and maintaining equipment (including materials and software);
  • Health and safety procedures;
  • Advising in innovation and modification of available equipment;
  • Design and test electronic circuits and digital measurement setups;
  • Maintenance of electromechanical and electromagnetic equipment;
  • Manage and expand signal processing equipment and magnetic materials measurement setups;
  • Designing PCBs;
  • Programming DSPs, FPGAs, microcontrollers, dSpace and triphase systems.
  • Administrating design software;
  • Managing software licenses;
  • Supporting the education by preparing assignments, giving instructions and checking reports of educational projects (from bachelor to master level);
  • Supporting the research by contributing with designing and testing research setups, advising on choice of parts, equipment and materials;
  • Perform measurements and writing measurement reports.

Requirements

For the Lab Manager position, candidates are expected to have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor, Master of PDEng in the field of electrical engineering, mechatronics or applied physics;
  • Diploma HTS-E with knowledge of digital techniques and proven affinity with electromechanics and power electronics;
  • Experience in designing electrical circuits and electrical machines, and in experimental validation;
  • Practical experience with laboratory instruments (such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, sensors, function generators, power analysers, wattmeters and multimeters);
  • Required experience in the following topics
  • Power converters
  • Electrical drives
  • Permanent magnet machines
  • Wireless energy transfer

  • Experience with various microcontrollers;
  • Experience in programming (MATLAB, MathCAD, C/C++, PLECS, LTSpice, PSim, Labview, Triphase modules and data acquisition);
  • Knowledge of and experience in these fields is a big plus:
  • High precision amplifiers and/or motion systems
  • Serial communication protocols (like CAN, SPI, RS232)
  • Basics of control theory
  • Basics of thermal and noise phenomena
  • Basics of cryogenic and superconducting equipment

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills;
  • A desire and drive to work on demanding technical problems, and the ability to come up with creative solutions to these problems;
  • Ability to share concepts, ideas and solutions with peers in a clear and concise manner without omitting the essentials;
  • Organisational skills, e.g. time management and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Good command of English and Dutch language (German is a plus).

Conditions of employment

We offer a challenging job in an ambitious research group for 1 year, with the possibiltiy of an extension after this year. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. The gross salary lies between € 2.835 and € 4.274, depending on experience and knowledge (salary scale 9 and 10).

Moreover, an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation is available.
