Job description

As professor for Art & Sustainability you will lead the research group under the umbrella of the Research Centre Art & Society and as part of others Minerva Art Academy and Prince Claus Conservatoire. Your primary working environment is Minerva Art Academy. The aims and scope of your research activities is developed in close communication with the professor Image in Context (Art & Participation) and the leading professor of the Research Centre Art & Society (Art & Education). The research centre has the following supporting staff: a programme manager, management assistant, project assistant and a communication officer. Your line manager is the Dean of Minerva Art Academy.

Art & Sustainability
Based on the strategic plan of the Research Centre you will focus mainly on the strategic theme of Art & Sustainability. The way in which society uses its finite resources now is becoming an issue. Not only because these resources are finite but also because the way of consuming triggers climate change. Our production system has to change and instead of producing waste, we have to work on making the system sustainable. Making our world sustainable is not just about the natural world, but also about societal gains, the human dimension and sustainable and reciprocal relationships.

The arts can contribute to this transition process. Its focus is on the development of creative practices and material knowledge, language, technical skills, and new revenue models as well as on the fostering of social cohesion through art and also on contributing to sustainable and reciprocal relationships by way of art. This is the reason why we collaborate with other sectors in sustainability issues. Innovation is achieved on the edges of professional fields and takes place across disciplines.

Who are we looking for
You are an authority in the field of applied research within the arts and the relation between the arts and a sustainable society. You have clear views on the way in which the arts can help the transition process in relation to the subject of sustainability. You are the initiator of research strands within this subject, you make connections between education and research at the art academy and the conservatoire and are able to develop these research strands further. The focus always being on finding workable solutions and working in a multidisciplinary setting. You contribute to the innovation lab Circular Design Factory and the innovation lab Climate Adaptation.

You are able to implement the results of the research into the education at Minerva Art Academy and Prince Claus Conservatoire. You contribute to the curricula of these educational institutions in an innovative way and publish about newly developed knowledge and developments in a wide range of media. You initiate new developments and products in the field of Art & Sustainability.

You are able to make connections between education, research, public and private and know how to inspire professionals and stimulate them to develop innovations through research. You possess organizational sensitivity and are able to weigh different interests against one another. You have an entrepreneurial spirit and are innovative by nature, which is apparent from your visibility in the field of research and you are well versed in the relevant new developments. You know how to balance sensitivity and professionalism and furthermore possess a pleasant and clear style of communicating. You initiate new developments and projects in the field of Art & Sustainability. You are part of a large existing network in the research and development community, you are a networker and are able to acquire new research projects.

You are responsible for the research group that consists of teacher-researchers and PhD students and are able to further develop this research group. You are proficient in managing novice and experienced researchers and are also proficient in acquiring external funding for at least 25% per annum.

Requirements

You have a PhD and experience in research in the field of artistic, material and/or design research, supported by your publications. You have proven leadership skills and are experienced in managing research projects with multiple participants. You have a relevant regional, national and/or international network, you have excellent social and communicative skills and are an excellent collaborator.

In addition, you have the capability to kindle enthusiasm for research in professionals, manage them in projects, and lead the implementation of (new) innovative projects. You have experience in obtaining funding and subsidies and have excellent oral and writing skills in both Dutch as well as in English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years, with the possibility of extension.

We offer an ambitious multidisciplinary research setting in which you can collaborate with professors, researchers, teachers and students from various disciplines. Commencement of employment is as soon as possible. We offer you a temporary appointment of 0.5 FTE, on the basis of a 3 year professorship as Professor A. After 3 years this temporary appointment can be extended subject to a positive evaluation. In accordance with Collective Labour Agreement for Higher Professional Education (CAO-HBO) the gross salary is € 5.219 minimum and € 7.284 maximum per month for a fulltime appointment.

The Research Group Art & Sustainability researches and develops new artistic practices in collaboration with diverse, societal partners, focusing on the relation between art and sustainable ways of living in and with the material environment.

Field of Research Art & Sustainability
Your field of research focuses on of how visual artists, designers, musicians and performing artists can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable society. You focus on the development of innovative methods and practices and investigate art’s potential to engender sustainable transitions. You will foster collaborations and crossovers between the arts into other sectors and disciplines at a regional, national and international level; based on the programmes of the creative industry “Groningen Creative & Resilient City”.

Groningen Creative & Resilient City is a consortium that mobilises art, design, technology, architecture and engineering within and outside of the Hanze University. Together with partners we work on new applications that will make the city and the region climate resistant in close collaboration with the Research Centre Biobased Economy and Research Centre for Built Environment. Different challenges have been subdivided into the innovation labs Circular Design Factory and Climate Adaptation. These innovation labs are consortiums of knowledge and educational institutions, care and welfare organisations and businesses, all focussed on open innovation and co-creation. As professor you are expected to make a key contribution to the development of these innovation labs.
