Job description

The department of Educational Science is specialised in research on professional learning in organisations. Researchers at our department study formal and informal learning of (future) employees, including the use of technology to measure and support professional learning. Our studies often take place in the high-tech, health, and educational sector with the intention to understand, evaluate and optimize professional learning in these various contexts. We aim to understand the interactions between learning processes on the individual, team, and organizational level and design (technology based) interventions to optimize these processes. In our research group, we combine expertise from a range of disciplines (e.g., educational sciences, psychology, business administration). Staff members participate in the ICO research school (the Interuniversity Centre of Educational Sciences) and the Twente Graduate School. Our department is responsible for the courses of the Human Resource Development track of the Master Educational Science and Technology, and the corresponding pre-Master program.

Are you passionate about high-end technological design? Do you want to continue developing your skills with a combination of education and work?

The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme offers you a 2-year position combining post-MSc education and a design project. The educational programme, carried out at the University of Twente (UT), will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. In collaboration with the UT Department of Educational Science you will contribute to the creation of an action-camera-based training method for secondary vocational engineering education (Dutch: MBO) in the field of underground infrastructure.

The project

There is an urgent need for engineers to help achieving the energy transition goals. An important bottleneck in vocational education of (future) engineers is the lack of integration between learning at school (theory) and the learning at the workplace (practice). Technology can help to bridge this gap. We will investigate the integration of action camera technology (e.g., GoPro) and teaching methods to connect teachers, supervisors, and students, to facilitate knowledge sharing and feedback, and help the students become skilled, reflective, self-regulated, lifelong learners and workers.

This project aims at developing and implementing evidence-based training instructions, materials, and methods, that can be directly applied in the learning communities. Besides the UT, many other parties are involved, including Koning Willem I College, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU), OTIB, BAM Infra Energie & Water, Alliander, Baas, Stichting BLEI, Bouwend Nederland, GOA Leidingtechniek, O&O fonds Netwerkbedrijven, Heijmans, Visser & Smit Hanab, Volker Wessels, TU Delft, Consortium Beroepsonderwijs, and Stichting Samenwerking Beroepsonderwijs Bedrijfsleven (S-BB)

As PDEng candidate, you will work at the department of Educational Science (OWK) at the University of Twente (UT). Your job includes:

  • Working in a team to develop protocols, strategies, and guidelines for giving feedback and performing assessments based on student-generated videos.
  • Translating these protocols, strategies, and guidelines into instructions, lesson materials and instruments for teachers and supervisors.
  • Analysing the strengths and weaknesses (from a user (student, teacher, and researcher) perspective) of the technological infrastructure (e.g., cameras; platform for storing and sharing student-generated videos; platform for creating e-portfolios).

PROJECT TEAM

The project is planned in such a way that practical and usable interim results will be provided. With an eye on wide acceptance and application, other independent parties will become part of the steering group of the project, including representatives from education (including teachers and school leaders), science, industry, and various schools for vocational education. The academic guidance will take place by the UT and HU.
