Quantum computers will revolutionize science and society by solving problems that are intractable for any conventional computer, even for today’s most powerful supercomputers. Quantum computing is already a reality as small and intermediate-scale quantum processors can today run small quantum algorithms. Several quantum technologies can be used for implementing quantum bits (qubits). Some of them, such as superconducting qubits, spin-based qubits, Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centres in diamond, and majoranas, are currently being developed at QuTech, a worldwide leading research centre on Quantum technology, Computing and Internet founded by TU Delft and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). Building a quantum computer does not entail only fabricating more and better qubits, analogously to classical computers which do not only require transistors and integrated circuits but rely on a complex hardware/software computer architecture. The Quantum and Computer Engineering department (of the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science of TU Delft) which closely work with QuTech performs a strong interdisciplinary research on the full stack of quantum computer (e.g., Quantum Logic, Quantum programming language, micro-architecture, simulator platform, etc.) to enable the design, the development and the demonstration of quantum processors and their potential.
The candidate will focus on the research and development of essential parts of full-stack systems, targeting current and near-term Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices as well as future large-scale quantum processors. This research is envisaged to include topics such as:
The candidate will actively participate in multidisciplinary collaboration with colleagues within the department of Quantum and Computer Engineering (QCE) as well as within QuTech. He/she will contribute to the development and teaching of quantum and non-quantum computing courses and educational programmes at BSc and MSc level. He/she will also contribute to the Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing roadmap of QuTech and the work within the QuTech-Intel partnership.
Department
The candidate will be member of the Quantum and Computer Engineering (QCE) department. QCE performs research in a broad range of computing and network architectures (including AI-oriented architectures, quantum architectures, neuromorphic architectures, computation-in-memory architectures, big-data architectures, and secure architectures) as well as the interface to technology (CryoCMOS circuit design, memristive-based and graphene-based circuit design, and test and reliability of integrated circuits) and related applications (compilers and mapping tools).
Fixed-term contract: temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract.
For candidates at the Assistant Professor level we offer an initial temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract. The duration of the temporary position is depending on (academic) experience. At the start of your employment, section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills as part of a development plan. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and during a formal evaluation after a maximum of 2.5 years. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively, you will be employed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
For candidates at the Associate Professor level we offer an initial temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract. The duration of the temporary position is a maximum of 1 year. After a positive performance assessment, you will be employed in a permanent Associate Professor position.
The salary range for an Assistant Professor position is 3.637 – 5.656 euro gross per month. The salary range for an Associate Professor position is 5.039 – 6.738 euro gross per month. Starting salary for Assistant and Associate Professor is based on level of knowledge and (postdoctoral) experience.
Each position comes with a start-up package including funding for research travel and a four year PhD student position.
TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
Delft University of Technology is built on strong foundations. As creators of the world-famous Dutch waterworks and pioneers in biotech, TU Delft is a top international university combining science, engineering and design. It delivers world class results in education, research and innovation. For generations, our engineers have proven to be entrepreneurial problem-solvers both in business and in a social context. TU Delft offers 16 Bachelor’s and 32 Master’s programmes to more than 23,000 students. Our scientific staff consists of 3,500 staff members and 2,800 PhD candidates. Together we imagine, invent and create solutions using technology to have a positive impact on a global scale.
Challenge. Change. Impact!
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
