Are you ready for postdoctoral research on the topic of inclusive waste management operating at the intersection of the circular economy, business models for waste management, inclusive urban development and systems modelling? The Erasmus Initiative “Dynamics of Inclusive Prosperity” (DoIP) and Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM) connects members of RSM, Erasmus School of Law (ESL) and Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil), and channels their expertise into ambitious multi-disciplinary research projects. The postdoc project is part of a large Sino-Dutch research programme on inclusive waste management funded by the Dutch and Chinese research foundations (NWO and NSFC) in which Erasmus University Rotterdam is a partner, along with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL), Peking University, Tongji University and Hong Kong City University Shenzhen Branch. The postdoc will be based at RSM in Rotterdam, and will be closely linked with other DoIP staff and fellow researchers at TU Delft. They will also be spending a considerable amount of time at TU Delft’s Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geo Sciences where some of the other ‘Inclusive Circular Economy’ project members work.

Job description

The role performed by the postdoc will have a specific focus on the dynamic analysis and modelling of area-based waste handling chains in real-life projects in the Netherlands and China. As DoIP’s specific focus is on scientific as well as societal impact, both academic output and relevance to real problem-solving are highly valued. Eighty per cent of the position is to be devoted to research that contributes to part (i) of the “Inclusive Circular Economy” research theme, and twenty per cent of the position is to be devoted to teaching in sustainable business.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you’ll be expected to:

  • develop the research theme “Inclusive Circular Economy” together with the scientific director and various partners involved in the research programme
  • collaborate closely with core faculty of the Erasmus Initiative, as well as researchers in RSM’s Business and Society Management department
  • conduct original interdisciplinary research at the intersection of circular economy, waste management, business models and dynamic modelling, co-author scientific articles to be published in leading journals and contribute to improving the performance of waste management systems in the Netherlands and China
  • disseminate the research at and participate in international academic conferences in industrial ecology, business, policy analysis and other closely connected fields
  • co-organise events and disseminate the research in the public domain
  • contribute to teaching courses in the field of business and society management, specifically related to issues of sustainability.

Requirements

The successful candidate has:

  • a PhD in business, industrial ecology, systems analysis, policy analysis or other discipline relevant to the topic
  • a developing publication record with proven excellence in the above-mentioned fields
  • expertise in the circular economy, life cycle analysis, waste management, business models and system dynamics or other dynamic modelling techniques
  • willingness to engage with industrial ecology, business management and systems modelling at a high level of detail
  • ability and willingness to play a leading role in an interdisciplinary research team and the dissemination of research in both interdisciplinary and public contexts
  • ability and willingness to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching
  • an entrepreneurial attitude, outstanding social skills, and ability to work in teams.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: Max 3 years.

The successful candidate is expected to start as soon as possible, and at least before 1 December, 2020. We offer a full-time, three-year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) with attractive employment conditions according to the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for universities (CAO NU). Salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at CAO NU scale  11 with a minimum of  € 3,746 and a maximum of € 5,127 gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8 per cent holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3 per cent, and offers excellent secondary benefits including a generous amount of vacation days. In addition, EUR takes part in the ABP pension scheme, and we also offer partially paid parental leave. For international spouses we have set up a dual career programme.
