In 2021, the Maastricht University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) and the Hasselt University Faculty of Architecture and Arts (FARK) – PXL-MAD, School of Art provide funding for a PhD position in artistic research, including a dialogue between artistic practice and reflection. This call provides information on the vacancy and the application procedure.

Job description

One four-year fulltime paid position provided by The Special Research Fund UHasselt – Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University in the framework of the joint PhD program between Maastricht University and Hasselt University.
The candidate will receive a double doctoral degree (2 separate degrees that refer to each other) between Hasselt University and Maastricht University.
The first two years, the candidate will be appointed by Maastricht University. The terms of employment of Maastricht University will apply. The final two years, the candidate will be appointed by Hasselt University. The terms of employment of Hasselt University will apply.
The PhD will be defended at Maastricht University.

Research Domains

Time schedule

  • February 15 2021, 23.59 - Closing date submission of applications
  • End of March 2021 - Applicants are informed whether they are invited for an interview
  • April 2021 - Interviews
  • June 2021 - Final decision by the Faculty Board of UM FASoS and approval by the Research Council/College of Deans at UHasselt for the Joint UH-UM applications

Requirements

Who can apply?

Graduates with a relevant (Research) Master degree and excellent grades. Motivated and determined researchers in the arts with first-rate analytical and writing skills as well as a significant artistic portfolio.

  •   A research proposal (in artistic research) that fits within the research domains of MAD-Research (Faculty of Architecture & Arts – UHasselt) and Arts, Media & Culture (AMC) (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences – Maastricht University) using the application form. See below for a description of these research domains and the application form.
  •  Within each of the two universities, a supervisor has to be appointed. Both of these supervisors explicitly commit to the project (by means of a signature). See below for procedure.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1-4 years.

The terms of employment of Maastricht University are set out in the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO). Furthermore, local UM provisions also apply. For more information look at the website http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl > Support > UM employees.

The intial contract period is one year. After a positive assesment the contract will be extended with 3 years. 2 years you will be employed at Maastricht University and 2 years at Hassalt University.

The salary ranges between €2.395-€3.061, according to salary scale 27 of the CAO-NU

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has about 250 staff members, and about 1,730 students. More than 77% of the students are non-Dutch (65 different nationalities). All programmes are offered in English and some are also offered in Dutch. FASoS offers four 3-year bachelor’s programmes: Arts and Culture, European Studies, Digital Society and Global Studies. Research is organised around four programmes: Politics and Culture in Europe; Science, Technology and Society Studies; Arts, Media and Culture; and Globalisation, Transnationalism and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in the historic city centre of Maastricht.
