GYM (Generate Your Muscle) aims to develop and commercially produce a stem cell therapy for recovery of muscle mass and strength in patients with muscle disease and muscle breakdown. The treatment consists of administering large numbers of healthy, autologous muscle stem cells, called mesoangioblasts, as autologous somatic Cell Therapy Medicinal Product (asCTMP), to the patient's blood. These mesoangioblasts migrate via the blood to the affected muscle, where they grow into healthy muscle fibers, thereby compensating the loss of muscle mass and muscle power.

Job description

The PhD student will concentrate on 2 topics in this project:

  1. Large groups of patients with a broad variety of diseases, like cancer, sarcopenia and stroke, suffer from loss of muscle mass and muscle power. Mesoangioblast will be collected from these patient groups to determine their therapeutic potential and suitability for a clinical trial.

  2. Culture condition for the mesoangioblasts will be enriched with components that optimize and stimulate cell proliferation and that improve their energy capacity, thereby increasing speed and regenerative potential, and reducing costs of the asCTMP production.
