Job description

The Department of Anthropology, one of the largest departments of anthropology in Europe with an excellent reputation in both research and teaching, currently has an opening for an assistant professor of Anthropology. The position will be part of the research group Health, Care and the Body.

What will you do?

You will actively contribute to the department and its teaching and research programs. The position will require you:

  • to contribute to the broad and diverse teaching and research profile of anthropology in Amsterdam by educational initiatives and publishing and participating in international research networks;
  • to develop and coordinate courses at the Bachelor and Master level in the general field of anthropology, and in particular in the anthropology of health, care and the body, medical anthropology and science and technology studies;
  • to teach general, specialist and methodological courses in the BSc-, MSc, Research Master’s- and PhD-programs of our department, and supervising undergraduate and graduate students;
  • to develop, carry out and supervise anthropological research at a high academic level, develop a line of research in collaboration with junior staff members and other researchers working at the department;
  • to acquire and help to acquire external funding for research (also alongside junior researchers);
  • to engage in activities in the public sphere and in other arenas outside academia;
  • to carry out administrative tasks;
  • to contribute to a fair and collegial working atmosphere in the department.

Requirements

You have:

  • a PhD degree and preferably experience as a postdoctoral researcher or (junior) faculty member;
  • a strong general knowledge of the field of anthropology;
  • a strong proven record in in general anthropology and medical anthropology/anthropology of health, care and the body;
  • a proven record of high-quality teaching at BSc- and MSc-level and a strong commitment to teaching;
  • a strong track record in ethnographic research;
  • willingness to develop expertise in one of the following areas which are important for our teaching programs: mental health, gender & sexuality, postcolonial/decolonial and queer theory, material semiotics and STS, visual and virtual anthropology, applied anthropology or other specializations within the broader anthropology of the body;
  • the ability to acquire research funding from external sources (e.g. Netherlands’ Organization for Scientific Research, the European Research Council, or other research councils, European Union, or other national and international funding agencies);
  • commitment to supervise PhD students;
  • commitment to carry out administrative tasks;
  • commitment to public anthropological engagement with non-academic actors;
  • excellent knowledge of spoken and written English;
  • the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification or Senior Teaching Qualification (or foreign equivalents), or are willing to acquire such a qualification on a fairly short term;
  • working proficiency in the Dutch language or the willingness develop this within two years.

Conditions of employment

We offer a full-time contract for 38 hours per week. Employment will initially be on a temporary basis for a period of three years with conditions of a tenured appointment agreed upon at the time of hiring. The preferred starting date is 1 September 2021. Salary depends on past education and relevant work experience, with a minimum salary of €3,746 and a maximum salary of €5.127 gross per month based on full-time employment for a 38-hour working week (in keeping with scale 11, as per the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
