The Department of Languages, Literature, and Communication is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in English Literature. The position is for a period of 4 years and includes 0.7 FTE career development time, starting from the academic year 2021-2022. The Lecturer will be involved in high-quality teaching and supervision activities at Bachelor's level.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following general and job-specific qualifications.

General qualifications:

  • a PhD in a relevant area (by the starting date);
  • a near-native command of English;
  • knowledge of English proficiency and grammar;
  • good communication skills;
  • ability to develop and use student-centred, activating teaching strategies in both online and offline settings, aimed at fostering an independent, academic approach to learning in a diverse student population;
  • basic teaching qualifications or the readiness to acquire them.


Job-specific expertise and teaching experience in one or a combination of the following subject areas:

  • Early modern English literature, preferably with a secondary interest in medieval English literature;
  • Modern English literature;
  • American literature;
  • Literary history and literary analysis;
  • teaching of writing literary analysis.


Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for University Lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years, if they are not already in possession of one.

Non-Dutch candidates are required to master Dutch at the CEFR - B2 level for reading and listening within two years of appointment.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (0.7 FTE) for a period of four years. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,790 and €4,402 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
