Job description

We are looking for an Automotive Engineer who is passionate about contributing his/her skills to innovative, goal-driven and team-oriented research on self-driving vehicles. The ideal candidate has strong vehicle engineering background, and an affinity with integrating high-fidelity robotic sensors, such as radars, LiDARs, cameras, GNSS/IMUs in a research vehicle. This requires expertise ranging from (embedded) software design, electronics, to administrating the vehicle’s local network and research PCs. (S)he is adept in physically handling sensors and other hardware equipment. (S)he is creative and independent, and brings good interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Integrate state-of-the-art sensor and actuator technologies, and other hardware in the groups' research vehicle(s). This includes both mechanical integration (mounting, cable management, power management, and calibration) and software integration (network interface, device drivers, assist PhD students with software implementations in Robot Operating System and dSPACE).
  • Develop risk analysis (e.g. FMEA), safety protocols, and test procedures. Organize, supervise and perform (self-driving) vehicle testing.
  • Collaborate and support staff and researchers in system integration, development, maintaining documentation, and mentor in best practices.
  • Maintain research vehicles and Vehicle Lab.
  • Coordinate vehicle registrations (e.g. insurance, RDW). Contact industrial partners and vendors to order new components, obtain hardware support, driver updates, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Demonstrate the research groups' vehicle capabilities during events.

Requirements

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • HBO/MS or PhD degree in Automotive Engineering, Electronics/Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, System Engineering, or related field.
  • Practical experience with automotive mechanical and electrical maintenance (hybrid power and hardware-in-the-loop systems) and relevant communication technologies (such as CAN/Flexray/Automotive Ethernet, etc.)
  • Experience with embedded, rapid prototyping and real-time systems (e.g. microcontrollers).
  • A Dutch driving license, category B.

Nice to have qualifications:

  • Experience with integrating sensors hardware and drivers (e.g. radar, LiDAR, camera, GNSS, IMU).
  • Experience with automotive software (e.g. Canalyzer/Dyanalize, AUTOSAR, Matlab/Simulink, dSPACE or/ and LabView, etc.)
  • Experience with robotics software, Linux, C/C++ (GNU Toolchain, CMake), Robot Operating System (ROS).
  • Experience with version control, issue tracking, and team collaboration.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • A salary according to the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
