Job description

With the growth in student numbers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science over the past few years, we have made significant investments in modernizing our education. This includes the creation of new tools, the integration of new platforms, and overall new ways to interact with the course materials.

Some courses have restructured their course materials in so-called "skill circuits". Inspired by technology trees from video games, these skill circuits aim to provide a structured overview of the material and help students navigate the large quantities of available practice materials for courses. Using a gamefied design, students can "unlock" more material, hidden bonus content, and chart their own paths through our courses. The current implementation of the platform supporting this way of designing courses is functional, but limited. You will be tasked to develop features related to progress monitoring (allowing students to see whether they are on track, and allowing lecturers to see how well the cohort is progressing), allowing inter-course connections, and integrating the platform with other platforms (for example WebLab and Brightspace). The platform is developed in Python (Django) and JavaScript (Vue).

We are looking for an enthusiastic software engineer who has an interest in educational. You will work in close collaboration with teachers from the Computer Science and Engineering Teaching Team (CSE-TT) to drive the platform forward and you help teachers transfer their courses into the skill circuit platform. You take pride in seeing your tooling being used in practice by hundreds of students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an innovative gamified platform that will be used by the more than 1500 students in our Bachelor programme.
  • Drive innovations in the platform, based on feedback from students, teachers, and study counselladviserors.
  • Connect the skill circuits platform to other already existing platforms.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
