Join our international research team to investigate the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in socially anxious adolescents.

Job description

This PhD project is joint doctorate program between the KU Leuven and Utrecht University. The overall goal of the project is to investigate the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) in socially anxious adolescents and underlying mechanisms of VRET. First, the efficacy of VRET in socially anxious adolescents will be investigated in an randomized controlled trial. Additionally, three candidate mechanisms will be examined in a series of controlled studies. Various studies are planned, of which some will be conducted at the KU Leuven (partner institution). The main study will be conducted at Utrecht University (main institution).

The core tasks for the PhD candidate will include development of experimental studies for the candidate mechanisms, designing protocols, recruitment of and data collection in socially anxious adolescents, analysis of psychophysiological and behavioral data, communication of results via publication in scientific journals and presentations at conferences, and collaboration with other members working on this project.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate who has a genuine interest in anxiety disorders, a strong motivation to conduct experimental and clinical research, and who has experience with cognitive behavioral interventions. Strong advantages are clinical experience with respect to anxiety disorders and research experience with virtual reality or experimental studies. 

We are looking for someone who has:
  • a Master’s degree in the field of Clinical Psychology and/or Mental Health Science;
  • excellent social and organizational skills;
  • well-developed analytical skills;
  • excellent writing and presentation skills (English and preferably Dutch);
  • knowledge of and experience in experimental psychopathology and CBT;
  • clinical experience (especially with respect to anxiety) is an advantage;
  • the ability to spend parts of the doctorate at the partner institution (KU Leuven).

Conditions of employment

We offer full-time temporary employment for one year that, with satisfactory completion, will result in an extension for an additional three years. Salary will range from €2,395 in the first year to €3,061 in the fourth year in the P-scale per month based on a full-time appointment. In addition, we offer attractive and flexible secondary terms of employment such as an annual holiday pay of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year and partially paid parental leave. Joint PhD

Each of Utrecht University and KU Leuven will award a single Diploma evidencing the conferral of the Jointly awarded Doctoral Degree of both Institutions. The Diploma’s will specify that the degree has been awarded in the framework of a Joint Doctorate Program.

The supervising team will consist of Prof. dr. I. Engelhard and Prof. dr. D. Hermans as promotores. The daily supervision (co-promotores) will be given by dr. K. Meyerbröker and dr. S. Scheveneels.

The candidate will join the Dutch-Flemish Postgraduate School ‘Experimental Psychopathology’, which will provide additional training and facilitate networking and collaboration with other researchers in the field of Experimental Psychopathology.
