Job description

The Department of ESS provides education and conducts research at a high level; in this way we try to make a tangible contribution to society. We are a department where people care for each other, where we help each other and work together. We are looking for a department manager to strengthen our management team.

In this spin-in-the-web position in a dynamic environment, you are the sparring partner of the department chair and member of the departmental MT, which also includes the three section leaders. You give the department chair solicited and unsolicited strategic, tactical and operational advice and facilitate the management cycle of the department. You coordinate efficient and effective operations and manage the support staff. In addition, you contribute to cross-departmental processes and projects and you support a network within and outside the department, with academics, support staff, management and the external networks.

You draw up the departmental budget, monitor the financial management processes and support and monitor (the acquisition of) externally financed projects. In addition, you are the final editor of department-wide communication on all kinds of subjects and you fulfil a linking position to the various services of the faculty and the university.

Requirements

You are an academically trained all-rounder with a talent for management and administration and an eye for people. Affinity with education, research, finance, human resources and communication is appreciated, although we do not expect you to have extensive experience in all these aspects.

To perform well in this position, you need to be able to lead and stand firm. You are meticulous and expeditious, with initiative and a focus on results. Our department has a constructive and inclusive working atmosphere, and we are looking for a department manager who is able to propagate this. Furthermore, we expect a good command of Dutch and English, both verbally and in writing. 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • The position involves a minimum of 30 hours (0.8 fte) and a maximum of 40 hours per week (1 fte). This is a temporary contract for 1 year, which will be converted into a permanent contract upon good performance
  • Depending on experience, the salary will be graded in scale 11 or 12. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
