Job description

Are you a committed scientist with the motivation to provide high-quality research and education? And are you passionate about discovering new insights in the field of European and/or International Law and contributing to the personal and professional development of students? Then use your research and teaching skills as Assistant Professor of International and European law. 
You are a legal scholar passionate about European and/or International Law. You have a good understanding of the legal aspects of market integration (from the EU or international perspective) and the implementation of European or international rules in the domestic legal order. Knowledge of the developments surrounding sustainable development and environmental law, such as the Paris Agreement and the EU Green Deal would be an advantage. You have excellent teaching skills and substantial teaching experience at both the Bachelor's and Master's level. Your main activities in this sphere will consist of lecturing EU law or international law courses and supervising moot courts and Bachelor’s/Master’s theses.

You have a solid track record of publications and are eager to engage in collaborative projects with colleagues at our Research Centre for State and Law. One segment of the Centre’s research programme is devoted to the study of the interaction between national and international and European law. It is therefore appreciated if you have a particular interest in the impact of EU law and international law within the domestic legal order.

Requirements

  • A PhD degree in international and/or EU law.
  • An excellent command of the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • An inspiring teaching style and enthusiasm for contributing to the personal and professional development of students.
  • Substantial teaching experience, coupled with positive student evaluations.
  • A decent track record of publications in journals/volumes of good standing.
  • Preferably, some knowledge of issues related to sustainable development, environmental law, the Green Deal, legal aspects of market integration, and/or the implementation of EU or international measures.
  • A good command of the Dutch language would be a plus.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • Employment for 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €4,612 and a maximum of €5,922 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 12). The use of a preliminary salary grade is possible (salary scale 11).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • This is a temporary position for one year with the possibility of a permanent contract.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment  and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 29 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.

The Research Centre for State and Law (SteR) delivers high-quality research exploring developments in the field of public law. The Department of International and European Law of the Faculty of Law develops and delivers high-quality education in both fields, in English as well as Dutch. It is responsible for a dedicated Bachelor's programme in European law, as well as for multiple Master's specialisations in international and European law. Its research covers various specialised fields, including international human rights law, EU external relations law, EU competition law, EU internal market law, and the administration of justice. The Department currently has over 20 staff.
