The Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience invites applicants for the position of Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience/Developmental Neuropsychology.

The assistant professor will be a key member of the section of Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience situated within the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience (Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, Maastricht University). Current research topics within the section are focused on the typical and atypical neurocognitive development of attention, memory, and number processing. The faculty/department offers excellent research facilities and expertise in neurocognitive research. It has access to several multiple channel EEG labs (also mobile labs), NIRS, TMS, a virtual reality lab and 3, 7 and 9 T fMRI scanning facilities.

Job description

As an assistant professor you are responsible for the following core tasks:

  • Initiating, conducting, and supervising cutting-edge and innovative scientific research in the field of neurocognitive development.      
  • Acquiring research funding, disseminating scientific knowledge, and establishing/maintaining  an international network.
  • Supervision of PhD students.
  • Course coordination and lecturing in the 1-year Developmental Psychology Master program which has a strong focus on neurocognitive development, including supervision of BSc and MSc theses/research.
  • The appointment involves 50% teaching and 50% research. Teaching reduction is possible after grant acquisition and some reduction may also be available via internal mechanisms.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant discipline (e.g. developmental neuropsychology, (developmental) cognitive neuroscience);
  • An established research program (or a strong research interest) in topics related to developmental cognitive neuroscience;
  • Expertise in neuroimaging and/or psychophysiological methods, sophisticated statistical data analysis, and programming;  
  • Outstanding research achievements demonstrated by excellent research at an internationally competitive level, an excellent publication record, including first author papers in high quality journals;
  • A strong drive to apply for research funding and build one’s own research line;
  • Experience and affinity with teaching at BSc and/or MSc level and a genuine interest in teaching developmental psychology/developmental cognitive neuroscience topics;
  • A Teaching Qualification Higher Education (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO)) or equivalent. In case the candidate does not have this qualification yet, we expect the candidate to be willing to acquire this;
  • A personality characterized by team spirit, ambition, vision and furthermore excellent interpersonal, social, communicative, collaborative and organizational skills;
  • Fluency in the English language in speech and writing. MSc programs in Psychology at the Faculty are taught in English. If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is  expected to be willing to learn Dutch within a reasonable time (to facilitate research at Dutch schools).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: five years.

Initially, candidates will be employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2), and will, together with the supervisor and tenure track committee put together a development plan stating specific development goals. The candidate’s development will be monitored on a regular basis by the tenure track committee. Five years into the appointment, an end-evaluation will take place and if goals have been met the candidate will be promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

We offer a salary as stipulated in the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. Within this framework, the salary offered is competitive with a minimum of € 3,807 and a maximum of € 5,922 per month (depending on experience) for a full-time position of 38 hours/week. In addition, there is an annual holiday allowance (8% of annual income) and an annual end-of-year bonus (8.3% of annual income).

Applicants from outside The Netherlands may be eligible for the so-called 30% ruling, a tax cut for highly skilled migrants that applies for a maximum of five years. If you are moving to Maastricht from more than 40 kilometers away, you may qualify for a one-time reimbursement of your relocation costs

Research at the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience is embedded into the Maastricht Brain Imaging Centre, consisting of 9 research lines/groups https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/m-bic/m-bic-research.The research within the Department combines the study of human perception and cognition with the development of advanced methods in neuroscience. Various brain-imaging methods are employed to understand, predict, and change human behaviour. M-BIC tests and develops new theories of normal and abnormal neural information processing, with special attention to brain plasticity, perception and cognition.
