Job description

  • You carry out projects in the field of greenhouse technology, mainly aimed at designing new and improving existing greenhouse production systems;
  • You contribute to the development and improvement of greenhouse production towards fossil-free, profitable production with a high-quality end product by researching greenhouse covering and screen materials for optimal use of natural light;
  • You use WUR LightLab for the characterization of new greenhouse covering and screen materials; you use simulation models in the field of greenhouse design, materials, climate control and energy management; and you collect data in experiments in (inter)national practice.
  • You actively shape the field, initiate and conduct acquisitions with national and international parties;
  • You translate scientific research results into practical applications and implement them in practice; you have close interaction with innovative growers and horticultural suppliers; you communicate your research results to the sector.
  • You work in a multidisciplinary team with various experts within and outside WUR;
  • You are the project leader of projects, often public-private partnerships in which companies, governments and other knowledge institutions participate;
  • You coach junior colleagues in their development and knowledge development;
  • You monitor the quality of WUR LightLab.

Requirements

You have an academic education in the field of applied physics or another relevant technical education and several years of work experience, preferably on PhD level.
You have experience in the following research fields:
  • Knowledge of the field of greenhouse technology, greenhouse covering and screen materials, materials science and optics;
  • Basic knowledge of the interaction of crop production and technical design of greenhouse (roof) systems and the willingness to learn more on the challenges of (international) horticulture;
  • Knowledge and experience with physical modelling;
You see project acquisition, both nationally and internationally, as a challenge. You actively shape the research field. You have a relevant network. You can organize well and oversee multiple projects and you have experience in leading large projects with multiple partners. You publish the research results in scientific journals, but also in publications aimed at a wide audience. You are able to initiate new research within the field of horticultural technology and formulate clear project proposals. You are able to communicate well in Dutch and English, with researchers and project staff as well as clients.

This position is preferably in Wageningen, but location Bleiswijk is also an option.

Conditions of employment

A challenging position with, depending on your knowledge, education level, competences and relevant experience, a market conform salary up to a maximum of € 5,183 gross per month for a full working week of 36 hours in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement Wageningen Research (maximum scale 11). At WUR you will work in an (inter)national leading organization in the field of research and education. This is a one-year position with prospects of permanent employment if our cooperation is mutually satisfactory.

The position described here is part of the Greenhouse Technology research team. In an ambitious research program we are working on energy saving in Dutch greenhouse horticulture, helping to make the sector more sustainable. In the coming years, Dutch greenhouses must be free from using fossil energy and causing emissions. On behalf of the government, suppliers and growers, we provide answers to research questions, stimulate innovations and help to implement them in practice. Internationally, research questions are often related to greenhouse production systems aimed at local growing conditions and achieving high yields with a minimal use of resources such as water and energy. In a number of (longer-term, out-of-the-box) projects we are pushing the boundaries of what is technologically possible in the future.

Projects involve close collaboration with WUR LightLab. This laboratory is part of the Greenhouse Technology team and carries out research to develop improved greenhouse covering and screen materials for horticultural applications. Improvements in the optical properties of materials for an improved crop production and increased energy savings are central to this. Research takes place in collaboration with companies, guidelines for new materials are developed and the potential of new materials is investigated by measurements, models and/or experiments. Another important activity is carrying out standard measurements of commercially available materials on behalf of companies. WUR LightLab is an ISO17025 accredited test laboratory.
