Job description

The Machine Learning group at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam invites applicants for a

Post-doc position (2 or 3 years) in the area of Spiking Neural Networks.

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the area of spiking neural networks and an interest in probabilistic computing.

Job description
The postdoc candidate will participate in the recently awarded NWO NWA ORC project "Acting under uncertainty". The goal of this project is to advance our understanding how humans are able to act in complex and uncertain circumstances, and how such knowledge can be applied to smooth our interaction with emerging autonomous vehicles. The whole project encompasses a broad spectrum of academic, industrial and societal partners and includes a large group of researchers. The postdoc position will advance state-of-the-art in spiking neural networks and their real-world applicability in applications like drones and other autonomous vehicles, and close collaboration is foreseen with labs at TU Delft, IMEC NL, and NLR. Some project management related tasks will also be part of the candidate's responsibilities.

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science and is an institute of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large. CWI is an internationally oriented institute, with 160 scientists from approximately 30 countries. The facilities are first-rate and include excellent IT support, career planning, training, and courses. CWI is located at Amsterdam Science Park which is home to one of the largest concentrations of beta science in Europe. A melting pot of innovation. Companies looking to collaborate can work together with brilliant students, scientists and fellow entrepreneurs. Collectively they develop revolutionary solutions for today's issues and tomorrow's challenges.

The CWI Machine Learning research group focuses on how computer programs can learn from and understand data, and then make useful predictions based on it. These algorithms integrate insights from various fields, including statistics, artificial intelligence and neuroscience. Machine-learning applications are increasingly part of every aspect of life, from speech recognition on cell phones to illness prediction in healthcare.

The group is involved in multiple national and international efforts, including the Human Brain Project (SGA3) on neurocognitive modelling, the statistics of privacy preserved health-care in an NWO COMMIT2Data project, the ELLIS network, and the recently awarded NWO NWA ORC project on Acting Under Uncertainty.
