Research at the University of Amsterdam Faculty of Economics and Business (UvA EB) covers the broad domain of econometrics, economics, business economics and business, and is organized in two large schools: Amsterdam School of Economics (ASE) and Amsterdam Business School (ABS). Next to building on its traditional strengths in the different areas of fundamental and applied research, UvA EB wants to explore research areas that focuses on 21st century (global) challenges.

Four broad areas with high societal relevance are chosen

  • Sustainability and Environmental Economics
  • Responsible digital transformations
  • Resilient society and stability
  • Nudging for a better world

UvA EB is looking for talented young researchers who want to further develop these areas within a PhD project. We seek outstanding motivated applicants with a strong interest in one of the four areas. All candidates with a strong research background in Economics, Business, or related fields are encouraged to apply. The PhD candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team with access to state of the art research facilities.

What are you going to do?

During the three or four-year PhD trajectory, you will follow PhD level coursework, plan and conduct your PhD research and be included in the teaching of the school’s programmes.

What do we require of you?

The PhD candidate will aim to generate research that can be published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals.

Your experience and profile

  • Formal requirements:
    • Masters’ degree (preferably a Research Master´s) in Economics, Business, or a related field (candidates with a degree in other relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply).
  • Task-related requirements:
    • Excellent speaking and writing ability in English, ideally with experience writing for a scientific audience;
    • willingness and motivation to independently formulate research projects and carry them through to completion;
    • statistical skills and command of standard software packages for analysing quantitative data (e.g., SPSS, R, MPlus), and a willingness to develop these skills further;
    • command of empirical software packages (e.g., Qualtrics) and a strong willingness to develop these skills further.
  • Additional requirements:
    • Strong motivation to pursue an international career as a leading scholar;
    • strong commitment to methodological rigor and scientific integrity;
    • energy and passion for researching solutions for 21st century challenges;
    • intellectual curiosity, eagerness to learn, and openness to criticism.

Conditions of employment

The employment contract will be for three or four years (depending on prior education) with an initial period of 12 or 18 months, with an intermediate evaluation after 12 or 18 months and a possibility to extend it for 24 or 30 months (in total three or four years, depending on prior education). End-result should be a PhD thesis. An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) conferences.

The gross monthly salary will range from €2.434 in the first year to €3.111 (base on 38 hours per week) in the last year. The Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities is applicable.
