Modelling for planning carbon neutrality through renewable energy

Job description

Do you want work on improving model-based decision support for the energy transition?
Do you want to contribute to open-source software and develop your skills as a scientific programmer?
Do you want to join a lively interdisciplinary research group in one of the world’s leading public research universities?

To start as early as April 2022 or later in 2022 as per agreement, we are hiring a postdoc funded for up to three years.

Your main responsibility will be to work on modelling the Europe-wide energy transition for the PATHFNDR project (https://sweet-pathfndr.ch/), using the Euro-Calliope modelling suite (https://euro-calliope.readthedocs.io/). There is considerable freedom to decide the exact research direction within this broad frame in consultation with the other project participants. You will also be expected to take on responsibilities in project management and coordination for the PATHFNDR project.

Additionally, we expect that you will:

• Contribute to the further development of the Calliope modelling framework  (https://github.com/calliope-project/calliope) and the friendly_data format (https://github.com/sentinel-energy/friendly_data), in particular with regards to improved ways to analyse and visualise model results, as part of the ECEMF project (https://www.ecemf.eu/)
• Contribute to the supervision of PhD candidates and MSc students
• Drive your own research agenda forward and develop your own novel research ideas, in which we will support you

You will be working with Dr. Stefan Pfenninger, Assistant Professor of Energy Systems (see https://www.pfenninger.org/) and join a lively community of internationally renowned interdisciplinary energy researchers in the Department of Engineering Systems and Services. Our faculty hosts a diverse group of people from different countries and disciplines, and we welcome candidates that contribute to and enjoy this diversity. Your work will involve collaboration and interaction with other leading European research institutions, as well as with industry and other stakeholders.

Requirements

You must be able to demonstrate that:

•    You have a PhD degree. You must have successfully defended by the starting date of this postdoc contract.
•    You can design, plan, and implement research projects on your own and collaboratively. Your publication record shows that during your PhD you have acquired the skills to be an autonomous researcher.
•    You have experience using energy system modelling software. Ideally, your experience includes open-source Python-based software like oemof, PyPSA, or Calliope.
•    You can program. Bonus if Python or a similar high-level language. Please make sure to list your programming experience on your CV and link to any evidence such as GitHub profiles or other publicly accessible material. 
•    You have very good written and spoken communication skills in English (Dutch is not required).

Demonstrable experience with project management and/or funding acquisition is an added bonus but not a requirement.
