Job description

The Faculty of Science / the Institute for Biology is looking for :

an assistant, associate or full professor in Imaging and Artificial Intelligence (1fte)
Vacancy number: 22-203

Key responsibilities
The Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) studies and teaches microbial, plant and animal sciences with a broad research scope from molecular and cellular levels to organismal and population levels. The IBL has a collaborative atmosphere that is fostered by strong expertise focused around four Research Themes: Bioactive Molecules, Host-Microbe Interactions, Development & Disease, and Evolution & Biodiversity. The overall leading principle of our research is harnessing biodiversity for health. The IBL is a growing institute and wishes to recruit a new group leader in super resolution imaging, who is, or will become, a future leader in his or her research field.

Microscopic imaging is at the core of IBL research in microbial, plant and animal sciences. The IBL and Science Faculty have state of the art facilities for high-content and high-throughput imaging and are home to NeCEN (Netherlands Center for Electron Nanoscopy), a world leading facility for cryo-electron microscopy. With the new group leader position, we wish to strengthen and expand our expertise in super resolution and correlative light and electron microscopy, and in image analysis using artificial intelligence. We are open to applications in the broad area of cell biology, including but not limited to host-microbe interactions.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong independent research line that is attractive for BSc, MSc and PhD students, and that can successfully compete for funding at the national (NWO, TTW, Top Sector) and international (ERC, EU) level. The research line should connect well with IBL’s Research Themes and be complementary to and thus strengthen the existing research at the IBL. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the BSc and MSc teaching programs of the IBL.

It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are committed to expand fundamental knowledge by curiosity and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline; their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 2300 staff and almost 5000 students.
