Job description

The assistant professor will perform three roles: teaching, research, and statistical consultancy. As teacher of statistics course(s) at the bachelor level in the study program Psychology, and possibly also in another bachelor program, you will be involved in all teaching aspects, including, development, coordination, implementation and assessment. You may later be involved in statistics courses at the master level as well. As researcher, you will do statistical research independently, but in collaboration with your colleagues of the interfaculty Methodology & Statistics department of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life sciences (FHML). Your research is preferably, but not necessarily, in one of the following domains: multilevel/mixed regression modeling, structural equations modeling, Bayesian inference, causal inference, large-scale multiple testing, permutation tests. Consultancy will be both to students (statistics advising for theses) and to staff from any of the four big departments at FPN, but will be limited to at most 20% of your working time.

Requirements

  • MSc plus PhD degree in Statistics, Psychometrics, Biometrics, Econometrics or similar;
  • Experience with statistics or methodology teaching to students of behavioral, social or medical sciences, with positive evaluations by students and educational management;
  • Excellent mathematical and computer programming skills;
  • Knowledge of R and SPSS or similar (e.g. Python, Stata);
  • Expertise in any of the research domains mentioned in the job description is a plus;
  • Good writing and expressional skills in the English language;
  • Willingness to learn Dutch (passive and active) if you are not fluent in Dutch yet;
  • Independence, persistence, strong conceptual and analytical abilities, creativity, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, proactive attitude, and clear and structured presentation skills.

Conditions of employment

We offer a full-time position (38 hours/week) at the Department Methodology of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience.

You will be employed temporarily for 12 or 18 months (depending on your employment history) as assistant professor (level 2) and will co-develop and agree to specific development goals. Towards the end of this contract period and upon satisfactory performance, this initially 12 or 18 months position will become permanent. Your development goals will also allow you to grow further to the position of assistant professor (level 1).

The salary depends on academic qualifications and experience. The salary will be set between minimum gross month salary € 3,821 and maximum gross month salary of € 5,230 based on a full-time employment and in accordance with scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. For people recruited from abroad a reduced income tax rate may apply. Maastricht University has attractive employment conditions, which include a pension scheme, holidays, holiday allowance and an end of year bonus and partially paid parental leave.

The university’s relocation policy stipulates that you need to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If not already living in Maastricht (or its surroundings), you could be eligible for an allowance for moving costs.

Department of Methodology and Statistics

The assistant professor will work in the Department of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience. This Department works closely together with the dept. of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of the Maastricht University Medical Center, under a common leadership. Together, these two departments comprise 17 staff members from PhD student to full Professor, and provide the statistics education in six different Bachelor programs and various master and PhD courses. Current research is on multilevel/mixed models, mixture models, clustering techniques, optimal design and sample sizes, missing data methods, and reliability and agreement analysis of intensive longitudinal data.  Further, the department offers statistical consulting and support for advanced data analyses to researchers from other departments.
