Job description

Are you looking for a PhD position (4 years) in political communication research? Are you interested in data-driven campaigns, and would you like to become an expert on the topic? Then, read on because we might be looking for you!

For a large research project funded by the European Research Council awarded to prof. dr. Sanne Kruikemeier, we are looking for two PhD candidates in communication science, who will combine a substantial interest in political and/or marketing communication with strong methodological skills. Both PhD projects are part of the Strategic Communication group at Wageningen University and Research.

The conditional impact of targeting strategies on voters' political attitudes and opinions
This PhD project will focus on how different aspects of politically targeted messages can impact political attitudes and intended political behavior and persuade voters. This project will more specifically focus on the type of targeting practice, the content of political targeting, and the source of the message in various countries (Germany, India, Netherlands, UK, and US). Different aspects of the targeted messages will be linked to ability and motivation to assess how this affects the processing of the message. To study the impact of targeting strategies this project will rely on data collected by experience sampling and by conducting experiments. The project uses a comparative perspective and is interested in cross-national differences and similarities.

The research is embedded within the chair group Strategic Communication Group (COM), and members of the ERC team, which is led by prof. dr. Sanne Kruikemeier (sannekruikemeier.wordpress.com) You will be co-supervised by Annelien van Remoortere or Susan Vermeer. Please indicate in the letter if you have a preference for subproject 1, 2 or both.
