You are an outstanding and authoritative scientist who further develops climate attribution methods in collaboration with colleagues both within and outside KNMI. You will be based in De Bilt.

What will you be doing?
KNMI is increasingly being asked to establish the relationship between extreme weather events and climate change, both by policymakers, journalists and the general public. The KNMI conducts rapid attribution studies, which provide an analysis within a very short timeframe of the extent to which climate change plays a role in the occurrence of an extreme weather event in the Netherlands or elsewhere. This is a major scientific breakthrough in which the KNMI plays a leading role. Much of this work takes place within the international WWA consortium and in cooperation with fellow institutes. The further development of attribution methods still faces major scientific challenges.

You are the researcher who will further develop the scientific methods for (rapid) attribution with innovative techniques. For this purpose, you will use your extensive knowledge of the nature and physics of various types of extreme weather phenomena, as well as your expertise in the field of the climate system and climate models. You can interpret individual weather events from a broad overview. You make development choices with a keen eye for policy-related and societal needs. Together with the KNMI attribution team, you provide substantive direction to the research program in this field. You will further shape national and international cooperation in this field. You actively communicate the new insights and current research results to the outside world.

We are looking for an authoritative scientific networker with a broad view on the development of climate attribution. You involve other researchers in your work. You have a broad perspective and bring innovative methods to KNMI from outside. You actively acquire research funds. You make a visible contribution to shaping KNMI's R&D strategy.

• you are an authoritative researcher in the field of climate science and regional climate modelling. You have experience with climate attributions;
• You have proven experience with the use and development of (regional) climate models and with statistical analyses. Experience with data-science methods is recommended;
• You are a recognized participant in (inter)national research networks;
• You have proven experience in the acquisition of research funding;
• You develop research programs independently and involve internal and external networks in this;
• You are able to communicate scientific knowledge to a broad audience;
• Knowledge of the Dutch language and Dutch professional users of climate analysis are recommended.

Weather and Climate Model R&D department

KNMI's Weather and Climate Model R&D department focuses on the development of models of weather, climate and atmospheric chemistry and the application of these models to operational weather forecasts, climate scenarios and air quality forecasts. These developments take place in consortia with Dutch and foreign partners from national meteorological services, international organizations and universities. The department is responsible for keeping the knowledge required to make a full contribution to these collaborations up to date. To this end, the department actively seeks (inter)national research funds.
