We are looking for a new assistant professor who will collaboratively contribute to research and teaching in the area of machine learning (ML). The position is embedded in the Quantitative Data Analytics group. The group focuses on both fundamental and application-driven research in ML. We are looking for candidates with experience in the area of machine learning, with a special preference for those having expertise in one or more of the following areas: data-efficient ML methods, explainability of ML methods, and the utilization of domain knowledge in ML. We are interested in attracting an active researcher, able to perform ground-breaking research and to apply this research in relevant societal domains, including health-related analytics. On top, the candidate should be passionate about teaching. We also expect that bridges will be built with current research groups in the Department of Computer Science, in the Department of Mathematics, and the broader academic community in Amsterdam (including Amsterdam Medical Data Science, Amsterdam Data Science, the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence, and the VU Campus Center for AI & Health).
Your dutiesThe tenure track position starts at the level of assistant professor in the areas of research, education, and management (40%:40%:20%), and contains the following duties:
- Performing research in the field of machine learning;
- Developing new course material for the Bachelor and Master Business Analytics, a joint program with the Department of Mathematics;
- Supervise Bachelor, Master, and PhD students;
- Initiating and contributing to research grant proposals; and
- Contributing to administrative tasks.
