We are looking for a talented senior software engineer to join a growing team of developers in the Maastricht University Institute of Data Science.

Job description

Your technical background should be primarily Python, with interest or experience in data science and artificial intelligence technologies.

Leading a team of four developers in the Institute, you will be responsible for and shape the delivery of components across a growing set of projects, and be able to develop a coherent vision of the overall software development of the institute. A major focus of the Institute is in the development of open-source systems for research data management and data mining, with a focus on data repositories, ontologies and knowledge graphs, and machine/deep learning.

Your primary responsibility will be working on a major EC funded project developing a research platform for the agriculture and forestry domain. The project, undertaken collaboratively with partners across Europe, will involve research and development covering heterogenous data ingestion, FAIR metadata, knowledge graph construction, chatbot and voice interfaces to the overall knowledge repository as well query and REST APIs.

The Institute offers a highly collaborative, convivial environment with a large portfolio of research projects covering life sciences, health, food, agriculture, law and social sciences where the application of data science techniques can make a significant contribution. Colleagues will include developers, PhD Students, Post-Docs and academics all working on a variety of data science research challenges.

Do not be put off applying if you do not have all skills described, the important qualities are enthusiasm and passion for coding and that you can show us code you have written for example of Github or similar. Furthermore for this particular role we are looking for a person will take lead the rest of the team with an interest in or experience in software project management. A strong interest in data science and its use for the good of society is also a plus.

  • Lead a small team of developers delivering research and operational software across a number of projects.
  • Work with other developers and data scientists to code proof-of-concept projects and operational systems on large scale data sets.
  • Document design decisions, code, and workflows.
  • Migrate successful proof-of-concept projects into production environments.
  • Extend your skill set with new technologies and consider their applicability to current or future needs.
  • Contribute to the implementation of ETL processes, including data acquisition, data integration, data quality testing, data indexing and query answering.
  • Advise researchers in the preparation and execution of their research data management plans
  • Collaborate with IT colleagues from the Institute, Maastricht University and across Europe in international EC funded projects.

Basic Qualifications

●     Degree in computer science, or related discipline with strong software engineering components.

●     3+ years’ experience of IT platform development.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

●     38  hours per week,

●     The position is initially offered for one year, subject to evaluation and funding, the position is eligible for extension.

●     Salary is competitive, and will be set in scale 11, depending on qualifications and work experience of the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (expected minimum € 3.821, ranging up to €5.230 depending on experience) for a full-time job (38 hours/week). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance
