ASSISTANT PROFESSOR in Physics: Biophotonics and Medical Imaging

Published Deadline Location
23 May 20 Jul Amsterdam
Are you a talented physicist/AI expert in the field of Biophotonics and Medical Imaging, and looking for a faculty position? Then Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam would like to get in contact with you!

Job description

The Department of Physics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) invites applications from researchers in physics or computer science for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of assistant professor or associate professor. The successful candidate will join the Department and will be embedded in the Section Biophotonics and Medical Imaging, which will consist of 6 faculty members. Candidates are expected to develop an independent and externally funded research program and to foster collaborations nationally and internationally. Responsibilities also include teaching at the B.Sc. and M.Sc. levels. Women and others from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Research topic Biophotonics and Medical Imaging
Given the aging population and increasing health care costs, there is an urgent need for more, better, more cost-effective and personalized medical care. Photonics is a key technology that is currently already frequently used in diagnosis and therapy but has an even larger potential because of its relatively low cost, potential for high resolution, throughput, speed and minimal invasiveness. VU physics has a thriving research group in this area, with strong connections to the Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) on the same campus. The current focus is on optical coherence tomography, non-linear microscopy, Raman microscopy, in situ imaging using catheters, endomicroscopy, integrated optics and applications thereof in biomedical research and the clinic.

We are looking for excellent candidates with a proven track record in cutting edge science, that ideally have experience with the translation of technology into the clinic. The candidate is expected to set up a new and successful research line in the area of new imaging photonic technologies and/or methods for AI-based image analysis, complementary to our current lines of research.

Your duties
  • Develop an independent research program
  • Teach in Bachelor's and Master's programs
  • Supervise MSc and PhD students
  • Contribute to and write research grant proposals
  • Contribute to management tasks in the department
