Job description

Erasmus University Rotterdam has the ambition to make Open and Responsible Science (ORS) the standard and default for science at our university. We do so by increasing awareness on the advantages of ORS practices, by aligning research cultures and practices with organizational and societal demands, by recognizing and rewarding those who work according to ORS practices and by aligning research support with ORS-objectives.

As head of department Open and Responsible Science you are responsible for university wide policies and services that are supportive to these ambitions. You will have the change to apply your experience in research support infrastructures and grow as a manager.

You will be managing a growing multi-cultural team of support staff (currently 9 fte) consisting of a coordinator digital competence center, research data stewards, ethics review secretaries and open science advisors. Most of your staff is providing first line of support towards researchers and as such are partially embedded at the faculties. You are a supportive manager with a keen eye for work pressure, work fun and development of staff – your management style will play a key role in enabling your team to do their best work.

Your primary responsibility lies on activities in the stages before and during research projects. Though, under your coordination alignment with all stages of the research life cycle is ensured. Informed by the expertise and knowledge of the professionals in your team, you will push for alignment of support and policies between ORS, IV/IT infrastructure, privacy, open access and management of research data, research software and computing services. For this alignment, you work in close collaboration with the University Library, Erasmus Digitalisation and Information Services, Academic Affairs and the management and support staff of faculties.

Your other tasks consist of:

  • Advising university wide support staff, deans, deans of research and the university board of directors on the strategic course and actions to transition towards open and responsible science;
  • Representing Erasmus University in strategic university alliances such as UNL, Convergence and LDE (Leiden-Delft-Erasmus) on topics concerning policy and infrastructures for ORS.
  • Jointly with the management team of the recently established Erasmus Research Services you will build the university wide research support and align ORS support practices with support in the areas of grants and knowledge transfer/impact.

You will report in line to the director of Erasmus Research Services.

Requirements

You have completed a master's degree at an academic level and at least 5 years of experience in higher education. As an advocate of Open and Responsible Science you are fully aware of the essential functions ORS has for the quality, efficiency, impact and trustworthiness of science. You are digital savvy e.g. experienced with the development of research support infrastructure services and have thorough knowledge of the support that is needed to enable researchers to transition towards open and responsible science practices.

With a firm and proactive attitude and with organizational sensitivity you have proven to get things done in a complex stakeholder environment. Experience as an (supportive) manager in a multi-cultural, knowledge intensive organization is considered an asset.

Other requirements are:

  • Affinity with social sciences and humanities and their specific ORS practices;  
  • Capability to translate external and internal needs and developments into organization wide strategies, policies and support;
  • Experience as a strong and knowledgeable advisor towards managers and directors;
  • A relevant network in the area of ORS or the capability to build such a network. You know how to effectively use this network for the goals of the university;
  • An empathic team player and builder that dares to innovate;
  • Good communication skills in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Fluency in both Dutch and English (minimum level C1 Common European Framework).

Conditions of employment

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The start date of this position is as soon as possible and you will be based at Erasmus Research Services in Rotterdam, Woudestein campus. The position is for 1 FTE. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of €5.294 to a maximum of € 7.079 gross per month on a fulltime basis, in accordance with scale 13/14 of the CAO-NU. In addition, we offer an 8% holiday allowance, an end-of-year payment of 8.3%, and a very generous paid leave scheme.
