Job description

Machine learning is advancing on an extensive scale in the physical sciences. A substantial research effort is driven by the question of how to integrate physical prior knowledge into machine learning models in a principled, effective, and interpretable way.

As a tenure tracker in Physics-Informed Machine Learning at Delft University of Technology, you will strengthen and complement current and future research at the interface of computer science and the physical sciences. The principal aim is to study and develop methods and theory, to integrate physics into current machine learning technology, possibly at a fundamental level.

On the application side, these ML techniques could potentially contribute to ongoing research and development at TU Delft. Examples can be found in the material sciences, the earth sciences, and biologically inspired computer vision. The prospective research should, however, find applications primarily in the climate modeling challenges as put forth by the university’s Climate Action Program. You are expected to acquire funding for innovative projects from national and international funding agencies and contribute at an organizational level as well.

As a tenure tracker, you will inspire your colleagues and students through research and education, both in courses (existing or to be developed) and project-oriented education. With this position, you will take on a challenging bridging function between the Department of Intelligent Systems and the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing (as part of Civil Engineering and Geosciences). You will join our motivated, supportive, and sociable team of professors, teachers, Ph.D. students, and master’s students. We are an open group of people, heartily welcoming new people on our team. We will give you all the support you need to evolve in your tenure-track position.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make future-proof. We are also working on a world in which humans and computers reinforce each other. We are mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. There is plenty of room here for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1,100 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
