We seek an earth scientist who studies natural hazards (e.g. earthquakes, aseismic slip, rupture dynamics, giant earthquakes and tsunami, volcanic eruptions) and translates this knowledge into a better assessment of the potential impact of these hazards on modern society.

Your duties

• conduct research on earthquakes in plate boundary settings and/or intraplate settings, aseismic slip, rupture dynamics of giant earthquakes, and/or volcanic eruptions
• teaching in geophysics and/or volcanology as well as general courses for Earth-system science students on BSc. and MSc. level
• supervision of Masters and Bachelors theses
• acquisition of external funds
• (co-) publish scientific papers

• PhD in geophysics or volcanology with a demonstrable expertise in seismology/earthquake research or volcanic hazards
• experience in academic teaching (or willingness to acquire it)
• strong willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment
• our BSc programs are taught in Dutch. Therefore, Dutch proficiency, or willingness to learn Dutch, is a requirement

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.
The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years - 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring.
The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months.

About the department, institute, project
The Department of Earth Sciences has approximately 35 permanent staff members organized in twelve research groups. Research in the department is focused on two general areas: Geology & Geochemistry and Earth & Climate. The Department teaches in the Earth Sciences as well as in the Earth Sciences, Economics & Sustainability BSc programs, and in the MSc programs Earth Sciences and Hydrology.
