Job description

Are you a talented aspiring researcher who is interested in economics and behaviour? Do you want to understand and predict how farmers manage their businesses and if they adopt new strategies for ensuring yields or controlling pests?

We invite applications for the PhD position entitled: ''Identifying barriers and opportunities for farmers to adopt integrated pest management (IPM) strategies''. This research will be carried out within the HORIZON financed project entitled 'Supporting UPtake Integrated Pest Management and lOw-Risk pesTicide Use (SUPPORT)'.

The overall project's objective is 'to pave the way for the adoption of IPM tools and technologies by development of relevant and actionable scientific knowledge [...]'.

In this PhD project, you will contribute to this objective by integrated analyses of pesticide use and IPM adoption. Data on pesticide use is available in the form of financial, technical and environmental farm indicators from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) or Farm Accountancy Sustainability Network (pilot FSDN). Data on IPM adoption will be collected at a European level and includes a choice experiment among farmers.

The prospective candidate will work in an interdisciplinary setting, combining economic and behavioural sciences with agronomy and agricultural studies on the use of IPM strategies.

Specific objectives include, but are not limited to:
  • develop a survey design, that includes a discrete choice experiment, for the data collection on IPM adoption with farmers participating in the FADN/FSDN network;
  • conduct economic analyses on pesticide use and adoption behaviour to identify levers and instruments to move farmers in adopting IPM.
