The Chair group of Strategic Management at the Nijmegen School of Management invites applications for a PhD position on Sustainability Discourses. This position, which is part of the Centre for Responsible Strategy, will be supervised by Prof. René ten Bos and Dr Sjors Witjes and is funded by Radboud University. This critical research project is aiming for a better understanding of the concepts which are usually employed in the aforementioned Sustainability Discourses (e.g. sustainability, recycling, or resilience). The goal is to develop a philosophically and ethnographically informed perspective on the use of these concepts in a variety of settings. The discursive analyses will have both a conceptual (philosophical) and empirical (ethnographic) character. More specifically, this research will focus on how the concepts that undergird Sustainability Discourses frequently gain a moral (rather than technical) character and how this can vary in different regions.
Your task will be to coordinate the research project, collect and analyse data, organise the meetings with the supervisory team and discussions with different actors involved in the research project, conduct research, write scientific articles, and complete a PhD thesis on time. You will also participate in conferences and other scholarly and valorisation activities, including the supervision of Master's theses related to the PhD research.
Fixed-term contract: You will be employed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4 year contract).
The Nijmegen School of Management enables students, institutions, companies, societal actors and governments to play their part in a transformation towards sustainable societies. In doing so, the faculty is committed to Radboud University's mission of contributing to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all.
In the context of our 'Responsible governance for sustainable societies' mission, we address scientific and societal challenges from a good governance perspective. Our work focuses on the topics Beyond Economy, Climate, Inclusivity, Safety, and Democracy. By building, questioning and extending the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), we acknowledge their interrelatedness and focus on a number of grand challenges within society. On topics such as inequality, gender, decent work and poverty, we contribute to innovation and sustainable growth. Furthermore, we address environmental and climate challenges, seeking to contribute towards resolving them. At the Nijmegen School of Management, academic research and teaching are carried out in challenging educational programmes. These programmes are offered in the areas of Business Administration; Economics and Business Economics; Geography, Planning and Environment; Political Science; and Public Administration. Our academic research takes place within the Institute for Management Research (IMR). This research is carried out within the above-mentioned domains and in interdisciplinary research groups: the Hotspots. The Nijmegen School of Management currently has 350 FTE staff and about 5,000 students. The Department of Business Administration consists of five chairs: Strategic Management, Organisational Design and Development, Marketing, Methods, and Strategic Human Resource Management.
The Department of Business Administration is responsible for the BSc programme in Business Administration (including a full track in English, and a track in International Business Administration) as well as eight specialisations within the MSc programme in Business Administration (all in English).
Our interdisciplinary Responsible Organisation research programme addresses the multiple values underlying organisational responsibility, the conditions required to realise those values, and the interventions geared to the transition of organisations towards responsible organisations. We co-create knowledge with multiple stakeholders in the wider community to ensure the impact of our scholarly work. Our research activities fall under the responsibility of the interdisciplinary Institute for Management Research (IMR). The Strategic Management group focuses on strategy processes in relation to the dynamic and complex environment that organisations are confronted with, and the competencies and skills required to deal with the diversity and plurality of stakeholders to create multiple values for an organisation and its surroundings. Members of the Strategic Management department have published in high-impact journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Global Strategy Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, Journal of Law and Economics, Organisation Studies, and Research Policy.
