Job description

The Department of Water Management is actively looking for a new colleague who will share our vision, ambition, and enthusiasm for research and education. We are inspired and motivated by the societal challenges posed by climate change, need for safe and healthy water, resource security and a sustainable society. The research at our department can be characterized as “application-inspired fundamental research.”

We are looking for a highly motivated colleague with a water engineering background who can develop internationally leading research on urban water systems, i.e. urban drainage and/or drinking water distribution systems.

The following research areas are of interest:

  • Asset management of urban water infrastructure: advanced inspection techniques and related sensing, robotic and other technologies; new devices / methods for the optimised maintenance and rehabilitation of drinking water or sewer infrastructure; methods for assessing and predicting asset deterioration and remaining useful life, monitoring of system performance and dynamics;
  • Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS, aka nature based solutions or blue-green infrastructure): assessment of SuDS performance including co-benefits; smart SuDS with sensors and real-time control; planning and optimisation of SuDS in conjunction with existing (grey) infrastructure; impact of SuDS on the natural environment and society (quality of life and human health);
  • Other areas of expertise related to urban water systems will be considered too.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop an own line of research by formulating and answering research questions related to sustainable urban water infrastructure. As a start-up grant, the successful candidate will be able to recruit one PhD candidate.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the following areas:

Education: Contribution to further development and teaching on topics related to urban water infrastructure as part of our MSc in Environmental Engineering program. The successful candidate is expected to supervise BSc and MSc level theses.

Organization: Contribution to organizational / administrative activities and committees within the department and the faculty.

Projects: Initiating and contributing to new research projects. We encourage proactive engagement with both public and private partners for increased societal impact.

Requirements

You are a successful candidate if you have a drive to innovate through research-based solutions as well as the capacity to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders. You should possess a PhD degree in civil/water engineering and expertise in urban drainage and/or drinking water distribution systems.

The successful candidate has an inspiring personality, with the capacity to create lasting and effective connections between researchers in other groups inside and outside TU Delft, and act as a driver for the development of appropriate and sustainable urban water systems in the Netherlands and beyond. An ambition for acquiring external funding is required.

Teaching of MSc students and PhD candidates will form part of your duties. The ability and willingness to acquire a university teaching qualification is therefore necessary. The successful candidate should feel comfortable in contacts with institutional/ governmental stakeholders and be able to represent TU Delft – jointly with colleagues - in the national and international research community.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
