Job description

The Dutch steel-production industry has grown to a position in the worldwide top ten when considering performance in quality, efficiency, differentiation and CO2 emission. However, the coming decades must bring a drastic change in the production, usage and recycling of steel to significantly reduce the consumption of natural resources and energy, and to lower the emissions and waste generation on a local, national and global scale. To strengthen the TU Delft contribution to greening the Dutch steelmaking industry, amongst others, we are recruting a new scientific staff member specialized in sustaianble steelmaking.

This position will be embedded in the present Group of Metals Production, Refining and Recycling (MPRR), Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Close collaboration with academic and industrial partners will be a significant aspect in both research and education.

Education is an important component of your daily responsibility. You will devote yourself in developing courses and teaching in steelmaking and sustainable metals production and recycling, and supervising bachelor and master students from the 3mE faculty and MSE department. You are also expected to help students in finding external training and research projects in industry and to provide support in their future career perspectives.

Your research will focus on the fundamental and applied aspects of various primary steelmaking technologies, and/or secondary steelmaking (refining) down to solidification and continuous casting. Hot metal preparation and treatment from conventional and alternative ironmaking routes, and processing of steel scrap are important aspects. The research has also connection to the quality requirements from the downstream physical processing of solidified steel for microstructure and property control (physical metallurgy).

You will contribute to the maintenance of the research labs, and further development of more advanced research facilities through project funding and large scale investment funding.

You will be able to acquire substantial external funding from national, European funding organizations and metallurgical industry and be an active member of the international scientific community.

You will participate in organizational and strategic activities at the department Materials Science and Engineering and the faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering.
