Job description

The Dutch steel-production industry has grown to a position in the worldwide top ten when considering performance in quality, efficiency, differentiation and CO2 emission. However, the coming decades must bring a drastic change in the production, usage and recycling of steel to significantly reduce the consumption of natural resources and energy, and to lower the emissions and waste generation on a local, national and global scale. To strengthen the TU Delft contribution to greening the Dutch steelmaking industry, amongst others, we are recruting a new scientific staff member specialized in sustaianble steelmaking.

As an assistant or associate professor in Sustainable Steelmaking you will have the responsibility for research and education in sustainable steelmaking, with a strong involvement in the sustainability transition of steelmaking that is at hand by investigating fundamental aspects of the involved processes and by educating young engineers and doctors in this field. This position will be embedded in the present Group of Metals Production, Refining and Recycling (MPRR), Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). Close collaboration with academic and industrial partners will be a significant aspect in both research and education.

Education is an important component of your daily responsibility. You will devote yourself in developing courses and teaching in steelmaking and sustainable metals production and recycling, and supervising bachelor and master students from the 3mE faculty and MSE department. You are also expected to help students in finding external training and research projects in industry and to provide support in their future career perspectives.

Your research will focus on the fundamental and applied aspects of various primary steelmaking technologies, and/or secondary steelmaking (refining) down to solidification and continuous casting. Hot metal preparation and treatment from conventional and alternative ironmaking routes, and processing of steel scrap are important aspects. The research has also connection to the quality requirements from the downstream physical processing of solidified steel for microstructure and property control (physical metallurgy).

You will contribute to the maintenance of the research labs, and further development of more advanced research facilities through project funding and large scale investment funding.

You will be able to acquire substantial external funding from national, European funding organizations and metallurgical industry and be an active member of the international scientific community.

You will participate in organizational and strategic activities at the department Materials Science and Engineering and the faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering. As a member of the academic community, you also have an eye for organizational aspects of the university. You will be expected to participate in committees and make other functional contributions in the organization of the department, the faculty or the university. Requirements

We are interested in candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Degree of doctorate in process metallurgy or materials science;
  • An open, collaborative and ambitious character, driven by sustainability aims;
  • Significant publication record in scientific research in process metallurgy, in particular for ironmaking and steelmaking;
  • Experience and proven capability of external funding acquisition (national, European, and industry);
  • Teaching experience for master level of courses in process metallurgy and/or ironmaking and steelmaking;
  • Experience with supervision of master and Ph.D. students;
  • Excellent cooperation experience with industry partners and external parties
  • Leadership and organizational skills;
  • Control of the Dutch language or the ambition to attain this on a reasonable term.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The salary for a Tenure Track (Assistant Professor) position is min. €3.974 to max. €6.181 per month gross. For exceptionally strong and experienced candidates, an Associate Professor position can be considered. For an Associate Professor position different terms of employment apply. Depending on background and experience, the salary can range from min. € 5.506 to max. €7.362 per month gross.
