Do you have a HLO diploma or equivalent experience with and interest in microscopy and fluorescent biosensors? The Systems Biology Lab (A-life & AIMMS, VU Amsterdam) is recruiting for a technician to join our team to work on developing new tools using ...

Job description

Strikingly, a single molecule, named ppGpp, orchestrates decisions on growth and survival across bacterial species. Deciphering how this molecule encodes information in real-time and in living cells is currently impossible. In this project, we will set out to develop a biosensor based on fluorescence for direct measurements of this molecule in living bacteria. We will use state-of-the-art methods to generate and functionally screen large libraries of sensor candidates, using a combination of molecular cloning, flow cytometry and microscopy techniques.

For this project, we are looking for a junior laboratory technician that will be based at the VU in Amsterdam for a maximum duration of 1 year.

Your duties
  • Perform molecular cloning based on PCR to generate variants of fluorescent sensors
  • Transform bacteria (E. coli) with sensor variants
  • Screen functionality of sensor variants using a combination of flow cytometry and microscopy
  • Maintain a detailed digital lab journal to record activities and results.
