Assistant/Associate Professor Causal Reinforcement Learning

Assistant/Associate Professor Causal Reinforcement Learning

Published Deadline Location
17 Feb 31 Mar Delft
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are literally changing the world. However, many AI and ML techniques employ statistical models that do not take this into account. This can lead to a plethora of problems, of which performance lower than expected is perhaps the most benign. In contrast, causal models try and capture the true effect of interventions or ‘actions’, while reinforcement learning deals with understanding the long-term outcomes of such actions over time. Will you build on these techniques to set up a research program on how intelligent systems can better understand the true outcome of their actions and predictions?

Job description

We are happy to invite applications for an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) or Associate Professor position in machine learning, with a particular focus on Reinforcement Learning and Causality. We welcome candidates with interest in exploring the intersection between causal inference and reinforcement learning or other forms of sequential decision making, with a particular preference for applications in any of the fields of health, safety/security, energy transition and sustainability.

The successful candidate will be embedded in TU Delft’s vibrant AI community (http://ai.tudelft.nl), and have the opportunity to collaborate in the context of local networks, such as the “Convergence initiative” (https://convergence.nl) or the ELLIS Unit Delft (http://ellis.tudelft.nl), as well as extending their own international network.

We offer a full-time position (0.8 - 1 FTE). Our new colleague will have demonstrated excellence in research and preferably have some experience in teaching and supervision of students. The responsibilities include:

  • Setting up a successful research program relating to reinforcement learning and causality.
  • Acquiring and managing externally funded projects.
  • Contributing to our teaching programs.
  • Supervising students at various levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD).

Furthermore you are expected to develop a research line that relates to reinforcement learning and questions regarding causality, thus contributing to the departments theme on sequential decision making. You are willing to collaborate with other researchers in the department, faculty and broader university, for instance in the context of the ELLIS Unit Delft.

In case of demonstrated extensive experience in a similar role, the candidate could be appointed as an Associate Professor (without tenure track).

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
