Acoustofluidic single-molecule nanosystems

Job description

We are inviting applications for a PhD position at the interface of Biophysics and Nanotechnology.

In this ERC funded project you will develop a next-generation nanomechanical platform based on sound wave technology to control the transport of single biomolecules in space and time for molecular diagnostic applications. By combining acoustic tweezers and fluorescence microscopy, you will have the opportunity to 1) simulate, design and fabricate layered resonators with optical access; 2) perform correlative acoustophoretic transport and single-molecule imaging; 3) integrate the acoustic nanodevice in a nanopore platform for biosensing experiments. This project is based at the Precision and Microsystems Engineering Department at TU Delft, where you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities (cleanroom, chemistry lab, nanopore lab, optics lab) and equipment to initiate this new line of research. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary research group with expertise in 2D material nanodevices, scanning acoustic force microscopy, single-molecule imaging and DNA nanotechnology. Hence, working together and communicating with researchers across different fields is an integral part of this position.

Faculty Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

From chip to ship. From machine to human being. From idea to solution. Driven by a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment and discover its underlying mechanisms, research and education at the 3mE faculty focusses on fundamental understanding, design, production including application and product improvement, materials, processes and (mechanical) systems.

3mE is a dynamic and innovative faculty with high-tech lab facilities and international reach. It’s a large faculty but also versatile, so we can often make unique connections by combining different disciplines. This is reflected in 3mE’s outstanding, state-of-the-art education, which trains students to become responsible and socially engaged engineers and scientists. We translate our knowledge and insights into solutions to societal issues, contributing to a sustainable society and to the development of prosperity and well-being. That is what unites us in pioneering research, inspiring education and (inter)national cooperation.
