Job description

The creation and dissemination of knowledge are at the heart of the University’s activities. The University Library (is the University’s content manager: we support researchers and students to excel in creating and disseminating knowledge. In this way we contribute to the impact and relevance of Erasmus University Rotterdam. 

Within the Library’s open culture, a new position of Research Data Curator is created to advance this objective.

The duties will be diverse, combining individual and group tasks, intensively cooperating with different stakeholders on the University grounds.

The Research Data Curator works with researchers from various research disciplines and provides hands-on support in preparing the data for publishing and/or archiving.

The Datacurator will actively participate in implementing FAIR data principles and certification of data repository standards for the University. In the case of publishing, this includes making data findable, accessible, retrievable, and analyzable for others.

The Research Data Curator will coordinate and provide hands-on support in: 

  • Support the researcher in depositing the materials in the repository or archive 
  • Providing information (f.i. presentations, workshops, information materials, best practices) on the importance and benefits of metadata and data curation
  • Help select the most appropriate data repository for these specific materials 
  • Verify, process, and curate standards for data management and curation
  • Taking an active part in the Digital Competence Centre (DCC) of the EUR
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other experts involved in research Data Management, metadata management, data curation and -archiving such as Data Stewards, Privacy Officers, and IT professionals 
  • Track sector developments and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Participating in [inter]national working groups and initiatives on developing best practices for Data Curation, FAIR data, Metadata Management, and other related topics

Requirements

  • A university degree or level of thinking in a relevant field
  • Relevant experience or affinity with [research] data and creating metadata formats or standards and both cleaning and organizing data
  • Affinity with managing research datasets using analytic tools and/or statistical software packages, ideally backed up with a relevant educational background
  • Being able to translate the needs of researchers into hands-on support  
  • Being able to work in a multidisciplinary team but also independently 
  • Able to be self-motivated and taking initiative 
  • Understanding of how research operates and how data and software underpins high-quality research
  • Capacity to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action
  • Proficiency in Dutch and English (both minimum B2 or willing to learn)
