Job description

As Researcher Machine learning and sensors for Autonomous Greenhouses you will connect knowledge between the fields of crop production and resource use with artificial intelligence and modelling.
Within our team Greenhouse Horticulture you will as contribute with research on the design of intelligent horticultural production systems with reduced energy and water consumption and increased production with a high-quality end product.
Your duties and responsibilities include also:
  • Execute projects in the field of machine learning and data analysis for greenhouse horticulture; connects knowledge between the fields of crop production and resource use with artificial intelligence and modelling;
  • Use information from a diverse range of sensors (e.g. plant processes, water, nutrients, soil, climate, energy) and camera systems in greenhouses, connects information from various sources with each other; develop new models and algorithms to provide growers with management information;
  • Develop new measurement, analysis and control techniques to enable remote plant production and to optimize resource use; contribute to the development of knowledge for Autonomous Greenhouse operations in the future;
  • Applies modern machine learning methods such as reinforcement learning, develops new AI algorithms; deals with time series; uses various sensors; deals with data fusion;
  • Work in multi-disciplinary project teams together with other academic and industrial partners;
  • Conduct applied scientific research within the projects;
  • Communicate relevant research results to science and practise.

Requirements

  • Academic level of working and thinking in the field of Machine learning and sensor technology, study in e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Systems and Control, Biosystems Engineering etc.; PhD on a relevant field is an advantage;
  • Knowledge in the field of machine learning and time series; expertise on the field of modelling; knowledge of measurement and control technology, understanding of different sensor technologies; 
  • Experience in programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, C++, c#, Unity);
  • Basic knowledge of interaction of crop production, growth factors and technical design of production systems such as greenhouses or plant factories and the willingness to get familiar with the challenges of the (international) horticultural business;
  • Ability to combine theoretical knowledge with practical setups and implementation;
  • Experience with project-based work;
  • Excellent knowledge of Dutch and English language;
  • Is an enthusiastic independent researcher with good communication skills and team spirit; is customer- and quality-oriented.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. We offer, depending on your experience, a competitive gross salary of between salary between € 2.949,- and € 5.479, - gross per month for a full working week of 36 hours in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Wageningen Research depending on your experience (scale 10-11). You will initially receive a one-year contract, which will be extended to an open-ended contract upon in mutual enthusiasm.       
This position is preferably in Wageningen, however, Bleiswijk is also possible.

Business unit Greenhouse Horticulture
Wageningen University & Research, business unit Greenhouse Horticulture, is the internationally leading contract research institute for greenhouse horticulture. We focus on innovations in the greenhouse horticulture sector. Together with industry, science and government, questions on greenhouse design, crop management and cultivation are analyzed and translated into application-oriented research and innovation processes.
The business unit Greenhouse Horticulture has about 160 employees and four research teams:

The function described here is part of the Greenhouse Technology research team.
