Job description

Within the STEM research program Delft University of Technology is cooperating with the Dutch infra manager ProRail and research institutes TNO and Deltares on a better control of train-induced environmental vibration. The program, which is supported by a large-scale experimental agenda, focuses on developing a state of the art simulation tool for train-induced vibration diagnosis and prediction.

TU Delft recruits 4 PhD students for fundamental work within this research program. This PhD will focus in particular on the dynamic stiffness profile of the track and its registration, the track stiffness being one of the major aspects with regard to the generation of a dynamic axle load and vibration emission. The PhD position will provide you with a unique chance to further build your career in the field of train-induced vibration, embedded in a large research project with involvement of all major institutes and stakeholders in the Dutch railways.

Background:

Interaction between moving trains and tracks is at the origin of train-induced environmental vibration. The track stiffness governs the response of the track to both the static wheel load and the dynamic wheel load, and therefore the vibration field induced by passing trains. Real-time establishing stiffness profiles on the Dutch network for different conditions will allow for enhanced diagnosis of vibration hotspots and calibration of prediction models.   

Project description

As a PhD student, you will develop a robust, theoretical framework that allows for performance and interpretation of train-based pilot measurements of the dynamic stiffness profile of railway tracks, involving variables such as axle load, train speed, ambient temperature, track configuration, track condition, subsoil and other variables.

Requirements

You are a strongly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in Mechanical, Civil, Geotechnical or Aerospace Engineering or a related field.

We require a sound knowledge base of structural dynamics and modelling. Experience/affinity with vibration measuring techniques and signal processing, using tools such as Matlab, will be a plus. You preferably have a Dutch language proficiency and are able to express yourself fluently in English, both written and orally. You have excellent communication skills, are able to work in a team setting on fundamental research and to network.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year.
