Tutor for the Bachelor Security Studies

Job description

Key responsibilities
Tutors are responsible for teaching workgroups across the BSc Security Studies (BaSS). The primary role of the new tutors is to teach first year students in the Skills Labs. In the Skills Lab courses students work on their study skills, deepen their substantive knowledge (in conjunction with the lectures), and learn and practise academic and professional skills. Throughout the programme, students work on developing the following skill sets:
  • Academic skills: critical thinking, writing, communication, general research and interdisciplinary skills.
  • Professional skills: teamwork, intercultural skills, organisational and leadership skills, and reflection & lifelong learning skills.
Tutors in the BaSS will have several tasks:
  • A tutor prepares and teaches Skills Lab sessions with students (in a classroom setting and/or online);
  • A tutor has a role in the assessment of students, and gives feedback to students;
  • A tutor monitors the progress of students and facilitates to advance it;
  • A tutor attends all lectures of the courses that are scheduled in conjunction with Skills Labs;
  • A tutor follows the tutorial plan of the Skills Labs that are co-productions of the tutors and senior staff members;
  • A tutor is required to attend and participate in all tutor trainings and tutor meetings;
  • A tutor is an active member of the institute.

Selection criteria
Essential:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field. To complement the knowledge and skillset in our current team we are primarily looking for candidates with a background in Public Administration, Governance of Sustainability, Crisis and Security Management, Safety Science/Management or Cyber Security;
  • Recent graduate or 1-2 years of relevant work experience. This is an early career position;
  • Basic knowledge of, and interest in safety and/or security issues and how they are studied within various disciplines;
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students with demonstrated didactic and guiding skills;
  • Ability to work well in an international team, be flexible, work well under pressure and show initiative;
  • Strong proficiency in English (written and verbal);
  • Intercultural sensitivity and the ability to integrate different perspectives in your teaching and collaborations;
  • Willingness to work towards obtaining University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
  • Available full-time.
Desirable:
  • Interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary background;
  • Experience with teaching and/or mentoring students (using a variety of teaching methods and tools);
  • Strong quantitative and/or research skills;
  • Expertise or interest in economics, safety science and/or cyber security.

Conditions of employment

Terms and conditions
We offer a fulltime (38 hours per week) appointment for one year. Depending upon funding and performance, the position can be extended to a permanent position after 1 year. Salary range from € 2.960,- to € 4.670, - gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
The start date for the position is 21 August 2022. The successful candidates will be expected to be physically present in the Netherlands for the starting date of the contract. The first two weeks of employment will be entirely dedicated to training. Teaching (in-person or hybrid) will take place on our campus in the Hague and the hired candidates will be expected to be physically present on campus for at least 3 days a week.
