The Biocluster of the Imaging Physics Department in TU Delft is a small-scale biological facility encompassing a small vivarium, several ML1 labs, a bacterial culture lab, and an ML2 tissue culture lab. The facility is well embedded and used by various labs. Due to an expansion of the facility, we are looking to hire an extra support staff member.
The ideal candidate is open to learning, able to follow scientific protocols, manage experimental schedules, and able to perform physically demanding tasks. Training will be provided for all tasks involved in this job.
Lab support for the advertised position consists of a general part (see below) and focused support for our molecular/genetic engineering activity. The successful candidate will join two other support staff members whose focus is on vivarium support.
Focused support
The successful candidate will work closely with an international team of BSc, MSc, and PhD students to facilitate day-to-day lab operations. This will include:
- Cyanobacteria sub-culture and biogenic gas vesicle purification
- Heterologous expression of gas vesicles in different E.Coli strains.- Molecular cloning (e.g. PCR, transformation, electrophoresis, plasmid purification)
- Protein expression and purification
- Standardizing protocols for molecular biology work
- Training new lab members in the above tasks
General support
Next to the above specialized support tasks, several general support tasks are divided between the support staff. These include:
- Inventory management of durables and consumables (ordering, stocking, dishwashing, autoclaving)
- Maintaining stock of biologicals (competent cells, GMOs) and chemicals (making of buffers, solutions)
Candidates should have completed bachelor’s/master’s work in a life science discipline, or the equivalent. Experience with one or more of the following: FELASA or Dutch WoD article 9/12/13 certification, microbiology, cell culture, molecular biology, and histology, is a strong plus.
