Job description

The new career-track Assistant Professor is expected to strengthen the position of the Department of Global Economics & Management. We are looking for an assistant professor in International Management who fits the research profile of our department. The ideal candidate will have an affinity to, and a track record of research in one or more of the following topics:

- sustainability and CSR
- digitalization and artificial intelligence
- culture and institutions
- internationalization and international strategy
- ownership and corporate governance.

You are expected to conduct high-quality, creative research in the areas of interest to the department and publish in high-ranked international journals. You will work in a dynamic academic environment with excellent research facilities. As you progress in your career, you will be expected to take on coordination roles with respect to teaching and research activities in the department.

You will contribute to teaching courses in our Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes, and to the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses. Contributing to the two-year research masters program is also possible. We also expect that candidates are willing to take recent developments on board in their teaching, such as Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Future Prosperity and Sustainability, and Leadership and Governance. These themes are recognized as societally relevant “focus areas” in the Faculty of Economics and Business.

The Department of Global Economics & Management in the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen (Netherlands) invites applications for an assistant professor of International Management.

The department is an active and international research group, consisting of approximately 80 people and encompasses International Management as well as International Economics. The department is unified by its interest to perform theory-driven empirical research on (de-)globalization, sustainability, global value chains, multinational firms, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), ownership, governance and cultural and institutional change. Members of our department who research these topics include Rian Drogendijk, Gary Ge, Anne Kellers, Alan Muller, Maria Cristina Sestu, Jiyoung Shin, and Rieneke Slager. Their research has been published in a wide range of top journals, including Journal of International Business Studies, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Organisation Studies, Business & Society, Global Strategy Journal, and Journal of World Business.

The department offers two three-year bachelor programmes: the BSc International Business, and the BSc Economics & Business Economics. In addition, we are responsible for two one-year MSc programmes: the MSc in International Business & Management, and the MSc in Economic Development and Globalization. Members of the department also teach in the selective honours programme for BSc students, as well as the challenging two-year Research Master programme, which is intended for students aiming to do a PhD. All courses taught by the department are international in content and the language of instruction is English.

To qualify as assistant professor, the ideal candidate:

- has a PhD degree and is an emerging scholar in the field of international management
- is pursuing a research profile that matches the research interests of the department
- has a strong commitment to high-quality research
- demonstrates indications of ability to publish in top management journals
- engages in research that has practical relevance and is impactful to theory and practice
- is developing an international network
- has affinity with teaching international management subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

Career track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are permanent positions subject to a tenure decision after 18 months. Research time is 50% during the first six years, and promotion is conditional on the pre-specified set of criteria documented for the career track. Afterwards, it is allocated according to regular faculty procedures (comparable to US research schools). The vacancy comprises a full-time position at the level of Assistant Professor, but an 0.8 or 0.9 FTE appointment is possible as well, based on the preferences of the candidate.

We offer in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 4,332 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 6,737 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- an 8.3% year-end bonus
- minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment
- participation in a pension scheme for employees.
- a fiscal facility pertaining to extraterritorial costs, the 30% facility, may be applicable if the rules of Dutch tax law permit this, rendering part of the salary exempt from tax.

While the starting date of the position is 1 September 2024, an earlier start is also possible
