Job description

The successful candidate will come with a strong track record in applied mathematics and show great enthusiasm for developing novel methods within the broad scope of mathematical systems theory. Preferably, the candidate will strengthen and complement the chair’s existing expertise in the control of partial differential equations, model order reduction, port-Hamiltonian systems and mathematical physics. The candidate will visibly contribute to the multi-disciplinary research ecosystem around our Department of Applied Mathematics (such as the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology and the TechMed Centre for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine) by developing cutting-edge applied mathematical theory and methods to solve challenging problems.

In teaching, the successful candidate will be able to combine outstanding mathematical expertise with great didactical skills and contribute to both the bachelor and master programmes in applied mathematics and related engineering studies. Expertise and motivation to supervise multi-disciplinary student projects with one or several of the above partner departments and institutes is seen as a plus. It is further expected that the candidate will acquire the Dutch University Teaching Qualification within the first three years of the appointment.

Requirements

  • You have obtained a PhD degree in mathematics or a closely related field with a strong mathematical character. A focus on mathematical control theory and signal analysis is a strong plus.
  • You are passionate about innovative research and this is reflected by your publications in international journals.
  • You are ready to take up the challenge to acquire research grants, either via personal schemes such as within the NWO Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI/VIDI/VICI) and the European Research Council, or in collaboration with others.
  • You have excellent communication skills that allow for efficient interaction with colleagues from other disciplines.

Conditions of employment

  • Initially, you will be appointed for one year as an Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on your qualifications. We offer to appoint you to a full-time position, but a part-time position may be negotiable.
  • Near the end of the first year, you will be subject to a job performance evaluation. If your performance is evaluated positively and the circumstances of the organization remain the same, your contract will be converted into a permanent contract.
  • Criteria for this evaluation are a strong track record of publications, very good teaching capabilities, substantiated promise to acquire external research funding and the ability to build an international network and reputation.
  • Our terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Universities (CAO) and include a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%.
  • Depending on your relevant background and experience, the gross monthly salary on a full-time basis ranges from €4.332, - (scale 11) to €8.025, - (scale 14) gross per month.
  • A minimum of 29 leave days in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
