Job description

The prospective Assistant Professor will have the following primary responsibilities:

- explore the possibility to develop a dedicated track on energy transition in a digital world within existing educational programmes
- teach topics in the area of EU law, technology law and energy law in the bachelor and master programmes
- develop new courses focusing on the nexus between technology law and energy law
- supervising bachelor and master theses
- contributing to and developing own project-based research
- conduct research in areas where energy law and technology law overlap
- engage in the development of research projects.

This position is open for a person, with a proven background in research on EU technology law and, possibly, energy law (or at least willing to learn about energy law). The candidate(s) must be willing and able to teach technological concepts to legal students in an accessible manner.

The Faculty
The Faculty of Law (https://www.rug.nl/rechten/) of the University of Groningen is a modern institution with a longstanding tradition of more than four centuries. It offers several (inter)national Bachelor and Master programmes and with 5000 students and almost 500 staff members. The faculty forms a vibrant community and will move into new premises in the summer of 2023.

The position is hosted at two departments of the Faculty of Law, the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies as part of the STeP Group, and the Department of Business Law, European Law and Tax Law as part of the Groningen Centre for Energy Law and Sustainability. As of the academic year 2020-2021, the Faculty of Law has launched a new track on Technology Law in the LLB in International and European Law. In addition, as of the academic year 2023-2024, the Faculty is offering a new LLM in Technology Law and Innovation as part of the LLM in European Law in the Global Context. Besides, the Faculty offers an LLM in Energy and Climate Law ranked among the Top 10 programmes in the World in this field, for already for 7 years in a row.

Organisation
The position aims at linking STeP and the GCELS groups within the Faculty of Law.

The 'Security, Technology and e-Privacy (STeP) Research Group', is an interdisciplinary team of researchers, let by Prof. Mifsud Bonnici, organised within the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies (TLS). As can be derived from the name, the STeP Research Group is involved in research in three main areas in their broadest sense which are very much inter-related: security, technology and privacy.

The Groningen Centre of Energy Law and Sustainability (GCELS) brings together expertise from all branches of law within the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen to develop cutting-edge research and educational programmes relevant for the energy transitions. Its research covers the entire energy chain as well the transitions necessary to move towards a more sustainable society. As regards European Law, expertise is drawn from the European Law Section led by Prof. Wessel, while as regards Energy and Climate Law, expertise is drawn from the Energy Law Section led by Prof. Squintani.

Requirements

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have:

- a PhD (or have a defence date planned) in EU technology law, or related fields
- demonstrable knowledge of EU energy law, or willingness to learn about this branch of law, specifically as regards equal opportunities in the energy transition, as part of Energy Justice theories
- knowledge of computer science, artificial intelligence techniques
- publications commensurate with the stage at which the candidate finds themselves in their career, indicative of the ability to publish in leading academic journals
- relevant teaching experience and supervision of students
- possession of a basic university teaching qualification or preparedness to acquire this qualification within a reasonable timeframe
- excellent command of English
- knowledge of Dutch or preparedness to learn Dutch (B2) within a reasonable timeframe
- experience with the development of research projects will be an advantage.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 18 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,226 (salary scale 10) and € 6,737 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full time position
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- an 8.3% year-end bonus
- participation in a pension scheme for employees.

The appointment will be made for an initial fixed term period of 18 months, with the possibility for a permanent appointment upon positive evaluation.

Preferred date of entry into employment is 1 January 2024, or as soon as possible after that date
