What you will be doing
The GGP central hub is located at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI). NIDI conducts leading, high-level scientific research in the broad field of population studies thereby contributing to solving societal challenges. The institute is part of The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and is associated with the University of Groningen.

The Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) is an international research infrastructure devoted to the study of population and family dynamics. We are looking for a research fellow to work in the newly EU-funded Infra4NextGen European project (Providing research infrastructure services to support Next Generation EU). This project is led by the European Social Survey (ESS-ERIC) and involves 30 other European partners.

The aim of the project is to harness outputs from key social science research infrastructures in Europe and other reliable sources to support the aims of the ‘Next Generation EU’ programme and to inform EU youth policy. The core of the proposal is a set of existing research ‘services’, which will be repurposed and customized to focus directly on the five themes: Make it Green, Make it Digital, Make it Healthy, Make it Strong, and Make it Equal.

The GGP research fellow will work closely with their counterparts from the European Social Survey and the European Value Study. Specifically, the Fellows will form the ‘engine room’ of the project and will work very closely together. In addition to ensuring the data summary deliverables in the NextGenEU areas, they will also work with other WPs to ensure their work feeds effectively into those deliverables.

In addition, the GGP fellow will lead Work Package 4 (Activities and Resources to support the Make it Healthy pillar) and Work Package 5 (Activities and Resources to support the Make it Strong pillar).

This position is particularly well suited for a senior post-doc (4 to 7 years since the PhD) with an excellent knowledge of the GGP (or a similar survey-based infrastructure).

This position of Research Fellow offers a unique opportunity to work at the juncture of data and policy, to expand your international exposure & experience and to gain valuable experience in leading a work package. Moreover, the position being embedded in the GGP and NIDI, it offers opportunities to work in a scientific environment and to further develop your own research interests.

Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with the following qualifications:

Required:

1. PhD in sociology, demography or other relevant discipline
2. Excellent knowledge of the GGP or similar survey-based infrastructure (as a data user or fieldworker)
3. Publications in substantive fields related to the themes covered in the GGP (especially on young adults)

Desirable:

1. Experience in dissemination and networking activities
2. Supervision or coordination experience

A successful applicant will have excellent communication skills with different stakeholders, as well as have the ability to work in a team. The ability to handle rapid changes in priorities is a must. It is also necessary to have an excellent command of the English language, both written and oral, as this project’s main language is English.

Note that ideally we are looking for candidates who completed their PhD 4 to 7 years ago. Candidates who more recently completed their PhD are eligible but would need to demonstrate that they meet the other criteria, including having capability to lead a workpackage

Fixed-term contract: One plus two years.

Terms of employment
We are looking to fill this position for a period of three years, where the first year will be on a separate contract. Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is € 4,494 and the maximum salary is € 5,929 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 11 cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.

For example, by working an extra two hours a week, it is possible to increase the number of days off from 29 to 41 days a year (with full-time employment).

NIDI is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and affiliated with the University of Groningen. The aim of the GGP is to provide high-quality and cross-nationally comparable longitudinal data to answer pressing scientific and societal challenges on population and family dynamics. It is based on the collection, documentation, and dissemination of data from large-scale nationally representative surveys from Europe and beyond. It provides data on the transitions to adulthood, family dynamics, fertility decisions, work-life balance, well-being, and intergenerational exchanges. The GGP data have a high scientific impact and provide support for empirically-informed policies on families and population. As a research infrastructure, the GGP also supports multidisciplinary collaboration in the field of population studies, data innovation and survey methodology.
