Job description

Would you like to design interactive tools for cancer patients to personalize their treatment? Are you interested in AI-based clinical decision support systems as part of the Personalized Care in Oncology (PersOn) project? And do you enjoy working in multidisciplinary and international teams? Then join us as a PhD Candidate at the Behavioral Science Institute in collaboration with TNO. 

The Behavioural Science Institute at Radboud University and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) seek a PhD candidate to join the PersOn project and collaborate with a team including artificial intelligence experts and healthcare experts. You will be the one to bring the patient perspective to the project, aiming to leverage data collection, reflection and personal preferences from modelling to treatment with the patient in the loop' of the decision support system.

Several PhD candidates at different universities in the Netherlands will collaborate in this project. Although they will work on related but different subprojects, a close collaboration between them is necessary for successful completion of the project. 

Your project will consist of:

  • Developing theory for an AI-based patient-in-the-loop system in clinical decision support.
  • Co-creating with patients, caregivers and stakeholders.
  • Designing and developing interactive tools targeting patients and caregivers.
  • Evaluating the tools.
  • Publishing your findings.
  • Collaborating with fellow PhD candidates and other researchers in the project.

This PhD position comes with a 10% teaching load and the opportunity to work towards a University Teaching Qualification.

Requirements

  • You should have a Master's degree in industrial design, health technology, human-centred interaction, computer science, artificial intelligence, or a related field. A Research Master's degree is a plus.
  • You have a strong background in user-centred design, and you are experienced in conducting user research, concept development and evaluation.
  • You have affinity with AI research and healthcare.
  • You possess excellent organisational and social skills.
  • You are willing to learn and think across disciplines.
  • You have good communication skills and are well able to communicate with your fellow peers, the research population, stakeholders, and societal partners.
  • You are collaborative and like to work in a team.
  • You have excellent English writing and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in the Dutch language is a plus.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: You will be employed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4 year contract).

  • It concerns an employment for 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross starting salary amounts to €2,770 per month based on a 38-hour working week, and will increase to €3,539 in the fourth year (salary scale P).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • You will be employed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years (4 year contract).
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
