Job description

Are you a motivated research technician with an interest in molecular infection biology? Would you like to work and further develop yourself in a multidisciplinary team and in an innovative laboratory environment? Then come and join the Bartfai Lab in the Department of Molecular Biology at Radboud University, and work with us on exploring the biology of malaria parasites.

We are looking for a motivated colleague to take on technical responsibilities in our lab. As a research technician, you will carry out experiments examining the role of gene regulation during the development and adaptation of malaria parasites. You will be using laboratory techniques focused around cell/parasite culture and various molecular biology and omics technologies (proteomics, next generation sequencing, single-cell transcriptomics). You will work independently as well as together with other lab members on complex projects. In addition, you will contribute to laboratory management tasks such as monitoring laboratory supplies, safety aspects and regular maintenance of equipment. You should be enthusiastic to work with a diverse team of students and researchers, and engage in exchanging ideas and discussing ongoing research.

Radboud University

  • You have a degree in Science / Biochemistry or a related discipline from a school for higher laboratory education (HLO), or a university Master's degree in Cell Biology / Molecular Biology or a related field.
  • You have experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques, e.g. RNA and DNA isolation, qPCR, western blotting, molecular cloning. Experience with omics technologies or basic bioinformatics is an advantage.
  • You are a self-motivated team player who likes working in a dynamic academic research environment.
  • You have excellent organisational and communication skills in English (preferably also in Dutch).
  • You are precise in carrying out routine lab work and curious to explore new avenues.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: You will be employed on the basis of a temporary contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent contract in case of a positive evaluation of your performance.

  • It concerns an employment for 0.8 - 1.0 FTE.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts to a minimum of €2,693 and a maximum of €3,636 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and number of years of relevant work experience (salary scale 7).
  • You will receive 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • You will be employed on the basis of a temporary contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent contract in case of a positive evaluation of your performance.
  • You will be able to use our Dual Career and Family Care Services. Our Dual Career and Family Care Officer can assist you with family-related support, help your partner or spouse prepare for the local labour market, provide customized support in their search for employment and help your family settle in Nijmegen.
  • Working for us means getting extra days off. In case of full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the legally allotted 20.
Work and science require good employment practices. This is reflected in Radboud University's primary and secondary employment conditions. You can make arrangements for the best possible work-life balance with flexible working hours, various leave arrangements and working from home. You are also able to compose part of your employment conditions yourself, for example, exchange income for extra leave days and receive a reimbursement for your sports subscription. And of course, we offer a good pension plan. You are given plenty of room and responsibility to develop your talents and realise your ambitions. Therefore, we provide various training and development schemes.

The Bartfai lab aims at understanding how molecular mechanisms enable the adaptation and support the pathogenesis of malaria parasites. Our team has a strong background in the development and integration of innovative multi-omics technologies and we apply them to understand the biology of deadly pathogens.

The department of Molecular Biology is part of the Radboud Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (RIMLS-Science), which is one of the six research institutes of the Faculty of Science of the Radboud University. The overarching aim of RIMLS-Science is to decipher molecular mechanisms of disease. Research areas of RIMLS-Science include epigenetics, stem-cell and developmental biology, and computational biology. The central research theme is regulation of gene expression during development and in health and disease. Important tools used at the institute include next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, single-cell and spatial multi-omics analysis and computational analysis, as well as method development. To perform state-of-the-art research, RIMLS-Science operates its own wet lab, omics and computational facilities. This fundamental and applied research in medical biology and molecular life sciences has clear links to more clinically oriented research programmes at departments within the Radboud university medical center. RIMLS-Science actively contributes to teaching activities in the Biology study programme at Radboud University. RIMLS-Science currently has about 60 researchers (including 35 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers) and provides a vibrant and international working environment.
