Job description

Turbulent multiphase flows encompass some of the most complex phenomena in fluid dynamics, and their analysis presents a great challenge for even state-of-the-art experimental and numerical methods. Machine learning and artificial intelligence, currently revolutionizing the fluid dynamics field, can be powerful tools in such cases. However, they remain limited to simple scenarios involving single-phase flows. Our primary goal is to tackle the challenge of data-driven low-dimensional modeling of multiphase flows. The focus will be on a specific scenario of friction drag reduction in liquid flows by gas injection with future applications in reducing CO2 emissions in green transportation.

In this PhD project, you will have the opportunity to focus on characterizing and analyzing flows using techniques like particle image velocimetry and pressure measurements and collect optimal data for developing ML advanced models for simplified flow representation, with eventual application to control strategies. Depending on your interests and background, the focus will be more on the experimental fluid dynamics or the machine learning side.

As a PhD student, you will be part of two vibrant teams of researchers with diverse backgrounds and expertise within the Multiphase Systems (MS) and Learning for Autonomous Control (LAC) sections. Your supervisors will be Dr. Angeliki Laskari and Dr. Cosimo Della Santina within the Process & Energy and Cognitive Robotics Departments.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has the following qualifications. However, please consider submitting also if you do not match 100% of the requirements. The ideal candidate does not exist, and no one is perfect.

  • MSc. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or physics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in "fluid mechanics" or "machine learning", and an interest in getting into the other.
  • Experience with carrying out experimental work.
  • Strong mathematical/computational background (Matlab, Python).
  • Fluent communication skills in English, both in written and oral. For non-native speakers, this can be proven through IELTS or TOEFL (not necessary at the time of application), or by showing that you have attended a master program fully taught in English. Note that this is a hard constraint for all Ph.D. candidates at TU Delft.

Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. For more details please check the Graduate Schools Admission Requirements.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 year.

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2770 per month in the first year to € 3539 in the fourth year. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service. This service provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service offers a Dual Career Programme for partners and they organise events to expand your (social) network.
