Job description

The challenge

Dutch construction firms need to extend warranty periods for asphalt roads, driving a push for better road quality. The ASPARi research unit, along with 10 contractors and Rijkswaterstaat, aims to develop technology-driven solutions for monitoring and enhancing asphalt construction. A challenge is the reliance on GPS, which has limitations in urban areas, tunnels, and wooded regions.

The mission
The project's mission is to develop a sensor fusion method for accurate real-time positioning of paving equipment. The goal is to achieve consistent <50 cm accuracy without RTK bridge assistance, minimal sensitivity to site conditions, and near-real-time positioning.

The outcome
The project aims to create a working prototype that improves the accuracy, reliability, and robustness of the real-time paving monitoring system. This enhancement will lead to better road quality, reduced material usage, and improved productivity.
