Prestigious industrial PhD student position on “Ultra-high Capacity Terrestrial Free-Space Optical Communication” in a collaboration with Aircision B.V.

Job description

Are you fascinated by the idea that networks will adapt themselves with your needs without your intervention? Join us on this research project in close collaboration with several high-tech companies to develop and demonstrate the next generation optical wireless communication systems. You will be employed by Aircision and will work closely with experts in optical and radio frequency communication of Eindhoven University of Technology. Your work is embedded within the newly granted The Netherlands Growth Fund 6G-FNS (Future Network Services).

Research challenges
More and more wireless devices will be needed in the foreseeable future. We are evolving towards the era of 'hyperconnectivity', a state where the number of devices connected to the Internet vastly exceeds the number of connected people. Market forecasts show that more than 1000 wireless devices per person will be connected to the web in the very near future. This also is part of the ambitions for the upcoming 6th Generation wireless networks.

Free Space Optics (FSO) uses light to transmit data. For decades, FSO has been largely used in satellite communication and private enterprise networks connecting buildings with laser beams. The industry recognizes the upside of FSO as it is easy, secure and fast to deploy, has very high bandwidth potential and does not require licenses. The challenge is to bring FSO down from space to earth for commercial terrestrial communication.

In this research program, you are tasked to explore novel optical techniques for generating, transporting, detecting and controlling optical signals over hybrid networks partly consisting of FSO and partly of RF links. You should design and realize performance improvement in both data throughput and link availability. The work comprises analytical, simulation and experimental activities. The final goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of real-world data transmission using FSO devices for ultra-high speed.

About Aircision

Founded in 2019 and built by HighTechXL, a deep-tech venture builder, Aircision is a Dutch startup and recent spin-off from TNO. Aircision designs ultra-high-capacity free space optics systems that are deployed fast, cover long distances and are highly secure. Sustainability is a high priority for Aircision. Giving people access to better communication will allow everyone to exchange more information. If we can provide high-speed connectivity to everyone, not only do we contribute to a better infrastructure, but we could also play a part in reducing inequalities.
